FINAL  1   2   3   4   5
LEI (9-7) 19 8 25 16 - 1
MOA (15-6) 25 25 23 25 - 3
Kill: S. Gaogao (MOA) 19 kills

MILILANI — With her team seeking a much-needed pick-me-up after suffering two straight losses, Silerolia Gaogao delivered Thursday night.

The junior outside hitter put down a match-high 19 kills to lead Moanalua to a four-set win over Leilehua in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Tournament second-round game at Mililani. The scores were 25-19, 25-8, 23-25 and 25-16.

With the win, Moanalua — which had a first-round bye as the Red East's No. 2 seed — improved to 10-2 on the year and advanced to Tuesday's third-round, where it will play Red West top-seed Mililani at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium. Na Menehune had lost their final two regular-season games to Kahuku and Kalani entering the postseason.

"It was good for us to get back on the court and work out some of the issues we had in our past two matches," Moanalua coach Tommy Lake said. "I think the girls were ready to play tonight. We had a few lapses here and there, but for the most part, I thought we did a good job against a tough Leilehua team."

Na Menehune also claimed one of the OIA's six berths into the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Girls Volleyball State Championships, along with Mililani, Farrington and Kahuku. Mililani defeated Castle, Farrington beat Kapolei and Kahuku topped Aiea — all in straight sets — in other second-round games Thursday.

"Getting into the state tournament is always one of our goals for every season, so that was nice to get that out of the way tonight, but we still have work to do," Lake said. "Staying on the championship side of the bracket is what you want though; It's a rough road to make it back from the consolation side."

Gaogao, who is 5-feet, 11-inches, varied her attacks against the Mules. She used shots down the line, cross-court and roll shots from the back row to keep the Leilehua defense on its toes. Gaogao also was in on two blocks and recorded an ace.

"Lia is our power, you know, she can really put some power behind that ball, so I tell her to let it rip and not to worry about the hitting errors," Lake said. "She definitely provides that strong arm for us, but she also has good vision and knows when to change things up."

Moanalua trailed 11-6 in the opening game, but used a 7-1 run to take a 13-12 lead. Leilehua reclaimed a 15-14 lead on a Moanalua net violation, but Na Menehune used an 8-1 run to pull ahead, 22-16, and held on to win game one, 25-19.

Gaogao opened game two with a kill from the middle to ignite a 4-1 Moanalua run. Na Menehune extended their lead to 15-4 after Marina Adolpho recorded back-to-back kills and a hitting error on the Mules. Leilehua could do little to slow down Gaogao, who had eight kills in the second set. Moanalua closed out game two, 25-8, on a kill by Johanna Kruize.

The teams battled back-and-forth in the third game, before Leilehua took a 17-13 lead following back-to-back errors by Moanalua. However, scored the next four points and eventually took a 21-20 lead. The Mules answered by scoring five of the next seven points — including three kills by Kayla Kilaulani — to win it 25-23. Kilaulani had seven of her team-high 16 kills in the set.

Gaogao made sure Na Menehune got off to a quick start in game four. She put down two early kills to help her team take a 4-2 lead. Leilehua tied it at 4, but allowed a 13-2 run by Moanalua to fall behind 17-6. The Mules pulled to within 23-15 late in the set, but could get no closer.

"We kind of let up in that third set, but we came back strong in the fourth and were able to come out with the win," Gaogao said.

Adolpho finished with 12 kills, including four in game four and Kruize contributed 11 kills. Lyndsey Ng had three of her team's eight service aces. Moanalua committed 13 hitting errors and just three service errors.

The Mules had won four straight matches prior to Thursday and five of their last six, including a four-set win over East sixth-seed Kaiser in a first-round game Wednesday.

Leilehua, the Red West No. 3 seed, fell to 8-4 on the season and will play Castle, the Red East No. 4 seed, in an elimination match Tuesday at Farrington. That will follow another elimination match between West No. 4 Aiea and West No. 2 Kapolei at 5 p.m.

East top-seed Kahuku will play East third-seed Farrington 5 p.m. Tuesday at McKinley. Mililani and Moanalua will follow that match.

MILILANI 3, CASTLE 0

Ashlee Vaoifi had a match-high 12 kills with two aces and a block to lead host-Mililani to a sweep over Castle in the late game Thursday. The scores were 25-10, 25-12 and 25-19. Sarah Liva added 10 kills with two blocks, Jay Kapowai chipped in nine kills with an ace and Kayla Magbaleta had three of her team's seven aces for the Trojans, who improved to 11-0.

Qaire Puaauli-Puahi had a team-high eight kills to lead the Knights, who fell to 8-5. Castle, which defeated Pearl City in four sets in a first-round game Wednesday, fell to the consolation bracket.

Mililani, which has yet to drop a set this season, had not played in eight days since a sweep of Waialua in its regular-season finale. The Trojans earned a spot in the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Girls Volleyball State Championships, which will be held on the Big Island later this month.
