Leilehua to visit Moanalua Friday in OIA Red tourney opener




The Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Tournament gets underway this weekend with four first-round games.

Three of the four games will be played Friday night and two of the four will be televised live statewide on OC16, including West No. 5 seed Leilehua taking on East no. 4 seed Moanalua.

Na Menehune (3-5) host the Mules (5-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in the UHA Game of the Week.

Leilehua, which is playing in the first-round for the first time since the 2007 season, will start senior Justin Jenks at quarterback. He started in place of Mack Eberhardt in the Mules' last game and was the starter for all of last season before Eberhardt, a transfer from Groton, Mass., took over the reigns this year.

Moanalua has the leading passer in the state in senior Micah Kaneshiro, who has thrown for 2,432 yards and 23 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. He has completed 56.7 percent of his passes this year and averages 304 passing yards per game.

The teams have met 23 previous times, dating back to 1973. Leilehua has won every game, including a 29-3 win over Moanalua in an OIA Red quarterfinal game last season.

RED CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND
Leilehua at Moanalua, Friday, 7 p.m. (TV: OC16)
The Mules jumped out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead and a 52-7 halftime advantage en route to a 66-14 drubbing of Waipahu Friday. Jenks threw for 172 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Leilehua, which had lost three of its last four entering last weekend, is the fifth seed out of the Red West. Na Menehune were idle last week and last played on Sept. 27 when it beat Castle, 39-14, and is the East's fourth seed. The teams share two common opponents in Mililani and Waianae this year, but they are a combined 0-4 against them. The winner will play West top-seed Mililani.

Waipahu vs. McKinley, Friday, 6 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium
The Marauders (2-6) were blowout 66-14 by Leilehua on their home field Friday for their third straight loss. Waipahu, the Red West's sixth seed, is allowing 36.6 points and 327.1 yards defensively per game. The Tigers (4-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 35-14 win over Kailua Thursday. Gerime Bradley ran in two touchdowns and scored on a 98-yard kickoff return to open the game for McKinley, the Red East's third seed. The only common opponent the teams share is Kaimuki, which both teams defeated. The winner will play West No. 2 seed Campbell.

Kailua at Kapolei, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Surfriders (2-6) fell to McKinley, 35-14, Thursday for their second consecutive loss and fourth in their last five games. Quarterback Noah Auld threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort. Kailua is the fifth seed out of the Red East while Kapolei (5-3) is the West No. 4 seed. The Hurricanes had won three straight games before suffering consecutive losses the past two weeks, including a 18-14 defeat at Campbell Friday. Running back Triston Pebria rushed for 126 yards and quarterback Aizon Kahana ran in two touchdowns in the loss. The teams share three common opponents in Aiea, Campbell and McKinley. Kailua lost to all three, while Kapolei beat McKinley and Aiea, but lost to Campbell. The winner plays East top-seed Farrington.

Castle at Waianae, Saturday, 6 p.m. at Raymond Torii Field (TV: OC16)
The Knights (3-5) held off Kaimuki 28-13 Friday to claim the Red East's sixth and final spot in the 12-team tournament. Quarterback Stephen Lee threw for 322 yards with a touchdown and ran for 57 yards and two other scores in the win. The Seariders (6-2) will be coming off a bye in the final week of the regular season. They have won three of their last four games, including a 35-27 win over Kapolei on Sept. 27. Waianae, which has scored no less than 24 points in a game this season, is the Red West's third seed. The teams share two common opponents in Farrington and Moanalua. The Knights lost to both teams, while the Seariders defeated both.

WHITE CONFERENCE
Anuenue at Nanakuli, Friday, 6 p.m.
Na Koa (0-8 overall, 0-7 OIA White) are one of just two winless teams statewide and the only team on Oahu without a victory in 2013. Anuenue, which lost to Waialua 37-8 Saturday, is averaging just 4.4 points and 215.4 yards per game offensively, while allowing 39.5 points and 359.3 yards defensively. It has been outscored by 274 to 35 in seven league games. The Golden Hawks (3-5, 3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 34-14 win over Kalaheo Friday. Chazz Troutman rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.

Kalani at Waialua, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Toshiyuki Nakasone Field
The Falcons (5-3 overall, 5-2 OIA White) had a bye last week, but have won three straight games and five of their last six entering the weekend. Quarterback Noah Brum passed for 264 yards and five touchdowns in a 60-6 win over Anuenue on Sept. 28. He ranks second in all of D2 with 2,407 passing yards and is tied for the lead with 31 passing touchdowns. The Bulldogs (3-5, 3-4) have won back-to-back games since a three-game losing streak. Taleon Lele and Xavier Repollo scored two touchdowns apiece and Tala Talauega scored on a 19-yard fumble return in a 37-8 win over Anuenue Saturday.

Pearl City at Radford, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at John Velasco Field
The Chargers (5-3 overall, 5-2 OIA White) saw their five-game win streak snapped with a 31-6 home loss to Kaiser Friday. Blake Cooper scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for Pearl City's lone touchdown of the game. The offense managed just 126 total yards, including a meager 13 rushing yards. The Rams (7-1, 6-1) crushed Roosevelt, 45-0, Friday to win their fourth straight game. Quarterback Cody Lui-Yuen threw for 365 yards and five touchdowns while wide receiver Absolom Henry caught five passes for 185 yards and two scores and the defense held the Rough Riders to just 29 yards of total offense..

INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU
Damien vs. No. 2 Kamehameha, Friday, 7 p.m. at Kunuiakea Stadium
The Monarchs (3-4 overall, 2-3 ILH) had a bye last week and last played on Sept. 27 when it lost to Saint Louis, 41-7. Quarterback Syles Choy has thrown for 1,008 yards with 10 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. His favorite target has been Kealii Kaanapu, who has 25 catches for 367 yards and four touchdowns. The Warriors (7-1, 4-1), who will be celebrating their first homecoming game in 17 years, has won two straight since a 24-0 loss to top-ranked Punahou on Sept. 14. Kamehameha beat Saint Francis 61-26 at home Friday.

Pac-Five vs. No. 1 Punahou, Friday, 6:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium
The Wolf Pack (1-6 overall, 1-4 ILH) put up a respectable fight against six-time D2 state champ Iolani Friday, but ultimately came up short, 31-19. Pac-Five held a first-quarter lead of 7-0 and a halftime lead of 13-10, but allowed 21 straight points by the Raiders in the second half. The Buffanblu (7-0, 5-0) escaped with a 35-32 win over Saint Louis Friday after erasing a 25-21 third-quarter deficit — the first time they trailed an opponent at any point in 2013. Larry Tuileta threw for 298 yards and five touchdowns and Wayne Taulapapa rushed for 196 yards in the win.

BIG ISLAND INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION
Konawaena at Kealakehe, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Wildcats (6-2 overall, 5-1 BIIF) saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with a 21-16 home loss to Hilo Friday. Quarterback Brandon Howes, who threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort, ranks third statewide in D2 with 2,268 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. Wide receiver Chase Takaki has caught 39 passes for 680 yards — third best in D2 — with seven touchdowns this season. The Waveriders (3-4, 3-3) had lost three of their last four games prior to a 31-14 win over Waiakea Saturday.

Keaau at Kamehameha-Hawaii, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Paiea Stadium
The Cougars (1-5 overall, 1-5 BIIF) picked up their first win of the season against Honokaa Saturday by a score of 14-6. Keaau, which averages 9 points on offense and 24.2 points allowed on defense per game, had lost five straight to open the season. It is locked into the fourth seed in the BIIF D1 playoffs and will play top-seeded Hilo in a semifinal game next week. The Warriors (4-4, 3-3) fell to Hawaii Prep, 41-24, at home Friday. Quarterback Micah Kanehailua threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns, including two to wide receiver Logan Uyetake, in the loss.

Honokaa at Hawaii Prep, Saturday, 2 p.m.
The Dragons (0-7 overall, 0-6 BIIF) are the other winless team in the state (aside from Anuenue) and saw their best chance at a win go by the wayside in a 14-6 loss to Keaau Saturday. Honokaa, which had been shutout in five consecutive games entering last weekend, will be the fourth seed in the BIIF D2 playoffs and travel to top-seeded Konawaena next week in a semifinal game. Ka Makani (6-2, 4-2) post a 41-24 win at Kamehameha-Hawaii Friday and have won four of their last five contests.

Hilo vs. Waiakea, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium
The Vikings (7-1 overall, 6-0 BIIF) have locked up the No. 1 seed in the league D1 playoffs, which get underway next week. Hilo passed a big test Friday when it rallied from a 16-7 fourth-quarter deficit to beat D2 front-runner Konawaena, 21-16. Tristin Spikes rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown and Donovan Josue-Maa returned a fumble 55 yards for the go-ahead score with just over two minutes remaining. The Warriors (3-6, 2-4) have lost two straight games and four of their last five. Hilo beat Waiakea in a non-league game, 36-6, back on Aug. 16.

MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE
King Kekaulike vs. Maui, Friday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium
Na Alii (1-5 overall, 1-5 MIL) look to rebound from a 55-6 home loss to Lahainaluna Saturday. Linebacker Ian Manibog gave King Kekaulike an early 6-0 lead on his 11-yard fumble return for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game, but the Lunas reeled off 55 straight points in the blowout. The Sabers (4-3, 2-3), who were idle last week, have lost their last two games, including a 7-0 defensive struggle against Baldwin on Sept. 28. It was the first time this season that Maui was shutout. It is averaging over 25 points per game offensively.

Lahainaluna at Kamehameha-Maui, Saturday, 7 p.m. at
The Lunas (7-0 overall, 5-0 MIL) are in firm control of the Division II race in the MIL, four games ahead of both King Kekaulike and Kamehameha-Maui entering the weekend. Lahainaluna, the top-ranked team in the ScoringLive/OC16 D2 Power Rankings, routed King Kekaulike 55-6 Saturday and returns upcountry for a its second-round meeting against Kamehameha-Maui this weekend. The Warriors (1-6, 1-5) have lost five straight games. The Lunas won the first time the teams met, 42-7, back on Aug. 31 at War Memorial Stadium.

KAUAI INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION
Waimea vs. Kapaa, Saturday, 2:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium
The Menehunes (1-6 overall, 0-4 KIF) are coming off back-to-back shutouts, which includes a 27-0 loss to Kauai Saturday and a 28-0 blanking at the hands of Kapaa on Sept. 21. Waimea, which is averaging just 9 points offensively per game, has lost six straight games. The Warriors (3-3, 2-2) sit in second-place in the three-team KIF — two games behind first-place Kauai — and have yet to win consecutive games. Kapaa had a bye last week and last played on Sept. 28 when it lost to Kauai, 7-6.
