HALAWA — Despite 342 passing yards from Sean Schroeder, Hawaii blew a 14-3 first-quarter lead on its way to a 37-27 loss to San Jose State in a Mountain West Conference game at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors allowed 534 yards by the Spartans — their season-high in offensive output — and turned it over on three interceptions to fall to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the MWC.
Hawaii got first-quarter touchdowns on a 9-yard run by Chris Gant and an 8-yard touchdown pass from Schroeder to Vasquez Haynes, but gave up five straight scores defensively, resulting in 31 consecutive points by San Jose State.
Schroeder threw second-half touchdown passes of 28 yards to Billy Ray Stutzmann and 50 yards to Chris Gant.
Haynes finished with six receptions for 128 yards — both team-highs — and Schroder completed 28 of his 50 pass attempts. Steven Lakalaka led the ground game with 16 rushes for 77 yards.
San Jose State quarterback David Fales finished 16-of-35 passing for 318 yards and three touchdowns — one each to Tyler Winston, Chandler Jones and Billy Freeman. Winston caught six balls for a game-high 159 yards. The Spartans rushed for a season-high 216 yards to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the MWC. San Jose State snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
