Punahou flipped the script in the second half of its 35-32 win over Saint Louis Friday night at Aloha Stadium.
The Buffanblu, the top-ranked team in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, went from a pass-heavy attack in the first half to a triple-option ground game that ate up big chunks of yards in the second.
Quarterback Larry Tuileta threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-24 passing by halftime, but attempted just 11 passes after the intermission, completing eight of them for 75 yards and two more touchdowns. Sophomore running back Wayne Taulapapa, who carried just nine times, but picked up 68 yards in the first half, toted the rock 13 times for 128 yards in the second.
As a team, Punahou ran the ball just 14 times for 61 yards in the first two quarters, but picked up 159 rushing yards on 20 second-half attempts, mainly with a triple-option that featured Taulapapa as the dive option, Tuileta as the trigger-man receiver Luke Morris as the pitch-option.
The Buffanblu recorded three first downs by rush and seven by pass in the first half, but reversed course with seven rushing first downs and three passing first downs the rest of the way.
Saint Louis held a 25-21 lead early in the second half — the first time that Punahou trailed at any point this season — but Tuileta found tight end Dakota Torres on a 30-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to reclaim the lead. The Buffanblu used the triple-option on all four previous plays on the drive — including a pair of 14-yard quarterback keepers by Tuileta — to set-up the go-ahead score.
