SALT LAKE — Kahuku came, saw and conquered Thursday night.

Led by senior outside hitter Adora Anae, the Red Raiders played nearly flawless to sweep past Moanalua 25-15 and 25-16 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference match. A crowd of more than 300 fans packed the gymnasium on senior night for Na Menehune.

Instead, they witnessed a Kahuku team dominate from start to finish to improve to 10-0 while host-Moanalua suffered its first loss of the season to fall to 9-1.

Anae put down a match-high eight kills — four in each set — and committed just one hitting error on the night. Sinamoni Tonga had four of her six kills in game one and an ace, Mariah Berard-Kamakeeaina added five kills, a block and an ace and Talia Brown chipped in with four kills and an ace.

"All of us were all on tonight," Anae said. "When the time comes to put it down, we're all there as a team together working as sisters. Our bond is so strong."

The Red Raiders got solid passing from libero Olivia Wallace in the back row and quick, crisp sets from setter Rachel Blake to run a balanced offensive attack.

"I feel really good about tonight — very, very good," first-year Kahuku coach Tehani Fiatoa said. "I feel like we made some major improvements in the intangible, team-concept things that we've been really trying to work on and I think today was a good showing of how much of a team we have become."

Moanalua was never able to get it going offensively and committed 10 hitting errors against just 13 kills for the match. Na Menehune had not even dropped a set to an opponent before Thursday.

"One of the things we have to do is get better on our serve-receive because we didn't give our hitters too much of a chance and another thing was our girls were so anxious to play tonight that we kind of started out a little too fast, so we have to take advantage of what we do well," Moanalua coach Tommy Lake said. "We're a little bit more of a scrambling-type of team and we have to serve a little tougher, so there's a lot of things that we can do better, but you still can't take anything away from Kahuku — that's a tough team."

The smaller Na Menehune squad struggled to match the height of the Red Raider attackers and the fast, low sets to the pins from Blake.

"With their middle attacking and their two outside hitters, they're a powerful combination. They're a really tough team — we weren't clicking on all cylinders, but a lot of it had to do with them running their offense," Lake said. "They're tough physically and I think once their passing is improved — like it was tonight — when they run their offense, it's pretty amazing. Those outside hitters were going over our block and we can't get any taller right now."

Fiatoa said she was concerned with the mental state of her players entering a hostile environment after the long bus ride from the North Shore.

"That's what was the challenge was staying composed. When you have at team that has so much potential, sometimes it's rough to have to live up to that potential," Fiatoa said. "That's the challenge that our girls have — realizing that talent-wise, they are very, very good, but it's just realizing that talent is the challenging part."

Moanalua took its only lead of the entire match at 1-0 in the opening set. Anae put down Kahuku's first kill from the left side to tie it on the next play and Tonga gave her team a 2-1 lead with her kill on a pike set down the middle. The Red Raiders jumped out to a 7-3 lead on a Berard-Kamakeeaina kill from the right side to force a quick Na Menehune timeout, which did little to slow the visitors. Kahuku extended its lead to 12-4 to cap a 10-2 run and Lake called his second timeout in response.

"I was just trying to slow them down, because we were spinning our wheels and we were going so fast that we're not even getting a good swing at the ball," Lake said. "Our girls were really looking forward to playing Kahuku tonight."

Moanalua used a 5-1 run to pull within 13-9, but Kahuku scored seven of the next nine points to distance itself and finished game one on a 4-1 run. Brown's fourth kill of the set gave the Red Raiders the 25-15 win.

Kahuku registered 16 kills in game one and did not commit a single hitting error.

Berard-Kamakeeaina put down two kills early in the game two to give her team a quick 5-2 advantage. With backup setter Sharae Niu running the offense, the Red Raiders build a 13-7 lead following back-to-back kills by Anae from the left side and eventually took a commanding 20-11 lead on a Moanalua attack into the net. Na Menehune held off a pair of match points, but served it into the net to hand Kahuku the 25-16 game-two win and the match.

"All of our teammates knew their roles, executed early and we kind of kept building off of everybody and that trickled down to everybody and we rode that momentum through," said Anae, who noted the pre-match jitters her team had to overcome. "We were nervous, but we knew we had to get it done. Our hard work in practice paid off tonight. We knew that it was a challenge for us tonight, so we had to be in the right mind set to be focused and ready to play."

Silerolia Gaogao and Marina Adolpho led Moanalua with four kills apiece.

Both teams complete the regular-season Tuesday. Kahuku hosts Anuenue while Moanalua visits Kalani.
