Sixth-ranked Kapolei visits No. 8 Waianae Friday




Another week of prep football and another key game in the rugged Red West Conference of the Oahu Interscholastic Association highlights the weekend schedule.

Kapolei, the sixth-ranked team in this week's ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, pays a visit to majestic Raymond Torii Field and eighth-ranked Waianae Friday night in the UHA Game of the Week.

The Hurricanes (5-1 overall, 3-1 Red West) are led by a defensive unit that features linebacker Micah Paris and defensive linemen Kalani Vakameilalo and Kingston Fernandez. They are allowing under 17 points and just over 218 yards by the opposition.

The Seariders (5-2, 3-2) average more than 30 points and 306 yards offensively behind running backs Jemery Willes and Mahvan Tau and dual-threat quarterback Kekoa Kaluhiokalani, Jr.

Kickoff is approximately set for 7:30 p.m. or 25 minutes after the completion of the junior varsity game.


OAHU INTERSCHOLASTIC ASSOCIATION
RED WEST CONFERENCE
No. 6 Kapolei at No. 8 Waianae, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Raymond Torii Field
The Hurricanes and Seariders are separated by just half-a-game in the Red West with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Second-place Kapolei was idle last week after having won three straight since a 35-0 loss to Mililani. The Hurricanes scored 35 unanswered fourth-quarter points in their most recent game, a 48-27 win at Leilehua on Sept. 13. Running backs Tristan Pebria (six rushing touchdowns) and Mana Reis (three rush TDs, two receiving TDs) lead the team in scoring. Pebria has rushed a team-high 448 yards in five games while dealing with a lingering-hamstring injury. Waianae got a pair of defensive scores on second-quarter fumble returns and a late safety in a 39-0 win over Waipahu Friday.

No. 9 Leilehua at No. 4 Mililani, Friday, 7 p.m. at John Kauinana Stadium
TV: OC16
The Mules (4-2 overall, 2-2 OIA Red West) snapped a two-game losing streak with their 40-10 win at Aiea Friday. Quarterback Mack Eberhardt completed 16 of 20 passes for 247 yards with two touchdowns — both to Tristan Kamaka, who caught six passes for 125 yards. Leilehua outscored Na Alii, 33 to 0, in the second and third quarters and out gained them in total offense for the game, 463 to 200. The Trojans (5-1, 4-0) are in sole possession of first place in the Red West and have won four straight, including a 42-21 win over Campbell Saturday. Running back Vavae Malepeai, who ranks third in the state and second in the Red in rushing yards, carried a career-high 29 times for 136 yards with a touchdown and the defense got a pick-six by Jaren Zadlo and six sacks against the Sabers.

Waipahu at No. 7 Campbell, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Marauders (2-4 overall, 1-3 OIA Red West) have lost three of their last four contests and are coming off a 39-0 loss at Waianae Friday. Waipahu allowed 24 second-quarter points and generated just 127 yards of offense against the Seariders. The Marauder defense is allowing 32 points and just under 310 yards per game by opponents, while the offense averages under 13 points and 240 yards per game. The Sabers (4-2, 2-2) have won four of their first five games before a 42-21 loss at Mililani Saturday. Campbell allowed a season-high 448 yards and 35 unanswered second-half points by the Trojans. Quarterback Isaac Hurd has passed for 1,172 yards (third most in Division I) with 12 touchdowns against seven interceptions. The Sabers have lost both games that Hurd has thrown multiple picks (3 at Leilehua, 2 at Mililani).

RED EAST CONFERENCE
No. 5 Kahuku at Kailua, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Red Raiders (4-2 overall, 4-0 OIA Red East) are tied with Farrington atop the Red East standings and have won four of their last five games. In a 44-28 win over McKinley Friday, quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi passed for 250 yards and three first-half touchdowns, including a 50-yarder to PJ Liua, who also scored on a 1-yard, second-quarter run. Hiapo McCandless added 86 rushing yards and a touchdown on a career-high 21 carries and defensive end Lamone Williams had a pair of sacks in the win. The Surfriders (2-4, 2-2) enter the weekend in third place — two games behind Kahuku and Farrington and half-a-game ahead of McKinley — with two games remaining. Running back William Kailimai rushed for 157 yards with four touchdowns and quarterback Noah Auld passed for 195 yards and two scores in a 52-32 win over Kaimuki Saturday.

Castle at Moanalua, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Knights (2-4 overall, 1-3 OIA Red East) have lost three of their last four games and are in sixth-place in the Red East coming off their bye week. Ikaika Urasaki has accounted for a team-high 46 points this season. He has a team-high 277 receiving yards with five touchdowns and has scored on two interception returns in addition to 10 extra points. Na Menehune (2-5, 2-3 OIA) are coming off a heartbreaking 41-38 homecoming loft to Farrington Friday. Receivers Jason Sharsh (42 catches-653 yards-5 touchdowns) and Chad Aragon (50-631-6) rank first and second in Division I statewide and Donald Lambert (43-492-7) is third in the Red in receiving yards.

Kaimuki vs. No. 10 Farrington, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium
The Bulldogs (1-5 overall, 0-4 OIA Red East) enter the game in last place and four games behind the Governors (4-2, 4-0 OIA) in the Red East standings. Kaimuki is coming off a 52-32 loss at Kailua Saturday and has lost five consecutive games. The Bulldogs passed for 170 yards and three touchdowns — including 141 yards and two touchdowns from Tevita Lino — but also threw two interceptions, including a first-quarter pick-six. The defense allowed 432 yards of offense by the Surfriders in the loss. Farrington has won four straight and held off Moanalua, 41-38, Friday behind 284 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Sanele Lavatai. Bryce Tatupu-Leopolo ran in a touchdown and scored on a punt return and a 61-yard interception return — all in the third quarter — against Na Menehune.

WHITE CONFERENCE
Kalaheo at Waialua, Friday, 5 p.m. at Toshiyuki Nakasone Field
Both teams are looking to break three-game losing streaks entering the weekend. The Mustangs (2-4 overall, 2-3 OIA White) are tied for sixth (Nanakuli) while the Bulldogs (1-5, 1-4) are seventh in the nine-team division. Kalaheo has been outscored 130 to 25 in three games since a 2-0 league start. Running back Makena Johnston, who has rushed for a team-high 634 yards (11.1 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns, has been held scoreless in Kalaheo's last two games. Johnston managed 76 yards on nine rushes Friday, but the defense allowed 477 yards and 33 first-half points in a 47-0 loss to Radford.

Roosevelt at Kaiser, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Rough Riders (1-6 overall, 1-5 OIA White) have been outscored 200 to 71 this season and have lost back-to-back game by a score of 100 to 20. The offense gained just 24 yards and turned it over three times on interceptions and the defense allowed 259 yards and 28 second-quarter points in a 37-0 loss at Pearl City Friday. The Cougars (5-1, 5-0) are the No. 2 team in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division II Power Rankings and have won five straight, including a win by forfeit over Anuenue last week. Kaiser has scored 243 points this season — third-best in D2 — including 51 from its special teams and 26 by the defense. Thomas Leong has scored 12 touchdowns this season (seven rushing, two receiving, two kick returns, one punt return).

Pearl City at Nanakuli, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Chargers (4-2 overall, 4-1 OIA White) have reeled off four straight wins since on 0-2 start, in which they were outscored 82 to 15. Since then, Pearl City has outscored its opponents by a combined 134 to 27 to climb to third place in the league standings. Quarterback Jordan Taamu passed for 145 yards and ran in a first-quarter touchdown while the defense held Roosevelt to just 24 yard of total offense in a 37-0 home win Friday. The Golden Hawks (2-4, 2-3) have dropped three of their last four, including two straight. Chazz Troutman threw for 119 yards, including a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes, and rushed for 190 yards with another touchdown, in a 34-32 loss to Kalani Saturday. Nanakuli is allowing just over 40 points and more than 355 yards per game defensively.

Anuenue vs. Kalani, Saturday, 5 p.m. at Kaiser Stadium
Na Koa (0-6 overall, 0-5 OIA White) forfeited three days before a scheduled game against Kaiser Friday. Anuenue was shutout in its first three games and has been outscored, 177 to 21, in five league games this season. AJ Grace-Kekawa leads the team in scoring with two touchdowns and fellow running back Kaimalino Bobilies has rushed for a team-high 174 yards. The Falcons (4-3, 4-2) are one of the hottest teams in the White Conference having won four of their last five behind their aerial passing attack. Kalani withstood a 24-point fourth quarter by visiting Nanakuli in a 34-32 win Saturday that wasn't sealed until Brandon Roberts' game-saving interception in the end zone with two seconds left. Noah Brum passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns, including one to Trevor Yamashita, who caught seven passes for 138 yards. Brum and Yamashita lead D2 in passing and receiving yardage, respectively.

INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU
No. 3 Saint Louis vs. Damien, Friday, 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium
The Crusaders (4-1 overall, 2-1 ILH) have beaten up on Division-II opponents Pac-Five (73-6) and Iolani (49-13) since a 21-point loss to Kamehameha on Aug. 30. Adam Noga rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries and Ryder Kuhns completed 13 of 17 passes for 257 yards with two touchdowns against the Raiders Saturday. Saint Louis is third (last) in the ILH Division I race, one game behind Punahou and half-a-game behind Kamehameha. The Monarchs (3-3, 2-2) fell to six-time D2 state champion Iolani 19-3 Saturday and got their only points on a 29-yard, second-quarter field goal from Nicholas Angoco. Edwin Aumua carried 18 times for 119 rushing yards in a losing effort.

Pac-Five vs. Saint Francis, Friday, 7:45 p.m. at Aloha Stadium
The Wolf Pack (0-5 overall, 0-3 ILH) are the lone remaining winless team in the private-school league and have been outscored by opponents 225 to 50, including a 145-to-27 mark in the ILH. The defense allowed 340 rushing yards, including 216 by Kamehameha's Kainoa Simao, but got the only score in Saturday's 41-7 loss to the Warriors on Kasen Kunishima-Takushi's 57-yard fumble return in the second quarter. The Saints (1-4, 0-3) have been outscored by a margin of 172 points to 22 through their first three ILH games this season. Quarterback Ranan Mamiya scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter for Saint Francis' 63-8 loss to top-ranked Punahou Saturday.

No. 1 Punahou vs. Iolani, Saturday, 2:30 p.m. at Kozuki Stadium
The Buffanblu (5-0 overall, 3-0 ILH) are the top-ranked Division I team in the land and have beaten the No. 2 (Kamehameha) and No. 4 (Mililani) teams this season. Punahou has outscored opponents 169 to 28 this season and 135 to 8 in three ILH games. Larry Tuileta completed all four of his passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns in less than a quarter of Saturday's 63-8 rout of Saint Francis Saturday. The Raiders (4-3, 2-2) beat Damien, 19-3, Saturday to hold a tiebreaker over the Monarchs in the ILH D2 standings. Keoni-Kordell Makekau caught seven passes for 152 yards, including an 82-yard touchdown pass from Austin Jim On and kicked field goals of 27 and 26 yards in the win.

BIG ISLAND INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION
Kamehameha-Hawaii at Honokaa, Friday, 7 p.m.
The Warriors (3-3 overall, 2-2 BIIF) are coming off a one-sided 36-10 loss to Hilo Friday. Logan Uyetake caught five passes for 101 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass from Micah Kanehailua, and kicked an 18-yard field goal for the only points against the Vikings. The Dragons (0-5, 0-4) are one of two winless teams on the Big Island (Keaau is the other) and have been shutout in their last four games while having allowed 170 points in that span. Honokaa allowed a season-high 67 points by Kealakehe Friday and finish the regular season with afternoon road games at Keaau and Hawaii Prep.  

Konawaena vs. Waiakea, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium
The Widcats (5-1 overall, 4-0 BIIF) have won five straight since a 10-point loss at Maui on Aug. 17. After allowing three straight scores by Hawaii Prep Saturday to fall behind 21-7, but got fourth-quarter touchdown passes of 15- and 88-yards from Brandon Howes to Chase Takaki to set-up a game-winning 37-yard field goal by John Replogle with 15 seconds remaining. Howes ranks third in D2 with 1,791 passing yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions while Takaki is fourth in D2 with 604 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 32 catches. The Warriors (3-4, 2-2) got fumble returns for scores by Shane Picanco and Keala Fong in a 13-7 win over Keaau Saturday.

Keaau at Hawaii Prep, Saturday, 2 p.m.
The Cougars (0-4 overall, 0-4 BIIF) are the last-place team in Division I while Ka Makani (4-2, 2-2) are in tied for second place in D2. Keaau played tough in a season-opening 21-12 loss to Kealakehe on Aug. 31 and in a 13-7 loss to Waiakea last week. HPA's only two losses this season have come against Hilo (18-10 on Aug. 31) and Konawaena (22-21 last Saturday). Ka Makani built a 21-7 lead after three quarters, before allowing 15 fourth-quarter points by the visiting Wildcats. Koa Ellis threw for 140 yards and a touchdown and Bobby Lum also ran in a touchdown for HPA.

Kealakehe vs. Hilo, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium
The Waveriders (2-3 overall, 2-2 BIIF) could help themselves a lot with a win over the Vikings (5-1, 4-0) this weekend. Hilo has a two-game lead on both Waiakea and Kealakehe three weeks remaining in the league schedule. Kealakehe routed Honokaa, 67-0, last week to snap a two-game losing streak. Hilo won its fourth straight game with 29 unanswered points in a 36-10 win at Kamehameha-Hawaii last week. The Vikings' lone blemish this season was a 38-24 non-league loss to Konawaena on Aug. 23. Hilo visits Konawaena in a BIIF game next week with both teams in D1 and D2, respectively.

MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE
Kamehameha-Maui at King Kekaulike, Saturday, 7 p.m.
The Warriors (1-4 overall, 1-3 MIL) are in second place in the three-team MIL Division II race — three games behind first-place Lahainaluna (6-0, 4-0) and one game ahead of winless Na Alii (0-4, 0-4). Quarterback Chase Newton threw a touchdown pass, ran in another score and placekicker Kailoa Akoi accounted for 11 points on three field goals and two extra points as Kamehameha gained 240 offensive yards and allowed just 80 defensive yards. The campuses, which are just over half-a-mile apart in Pukalani, were opened within a year of each other (King Kekaulike in 1995 and Kamehameha-Maui in 1996).

Baldwin vs. Maui, Saturday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium
The Bears (3-3 overall, 3-1 MIL) lead the Sabers (4-2, 2-2) by one game in the Division I standings after the first round of  league play. When the teams last met — a 33-13 Baldwin win back on Aug. 23 — quarterback Jeremiah Badillo threw for three touchdowns and 134 yards on 10-of-13 passing, rushed for another score and running back Dusty Flores ran 16 times for 126 yards. Maui's quarterback duo of Austin Hoe and Tyson Takabayashi were 4-of-14 passing for 84 yards, two interceptions and no touchdowns.

KAUAI INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION
Kauai vs. Kapaa, Saturday, 2:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium
The Red Raiders (4-0 overall, 2-0 KIF) enter the weekend half-a-game ahead of the Warriors (3-2, 2-1) in the league standings following a bye last week. Kauai narrowly defeated Kapaa, 6-3, the first time the teams met back on Sept. 6 in a Friday-night game. Jonathan Paleka's 23-yard field goal midway through the third quarter gave the Warriors' a short-lived lead. Reggie McFadden carried 23 times for 98 yards in the game and scored the game-winner on a 15-yard touchdown run with 1:44 left. Kapaa is coming off a 28-0 win over Waimea last week.
