AIEA - Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez must be living right.

Despite trying to give away the game in regulation with turnovers, his Hurricanes stunned No. 10 Aiea, 17-14, in triple overtime in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West thriller Friday night at Na Alii's field.

Brandon Begonia, who had a 38-yard field goal attempt blocked in the second overtime, nailed a 30-yarder in the top-half of the third OT. The Hurricanes (2-2 overall, 1-1 Red West) then leaped with elation after Aiea's Ezra White hooked a chip-shot 18-yarder wide left in the bottom half the third OT.

"We tried hard to gift-wrap that game and give it to them," Hernandez said. "We did everything to send it air mail for them to win."

The Hurricanes lost three fumbles in regulation, both leading to Aiea's scores, including a 34-yard fumble return for a TD that put Na Alii up 14-6 with two minutes, 30 seconds left in regulation.

"We were very disappointed in the mistakes that we made," Hernandez said. "Unless we clean that up, it's going to be a rough road for us."

Following Maeva's fumble return, the Hurricanes took over from their 36. Aided by two crucial 15-yard penalties - a personal foul, late hit; and a pass interference on third-and-9 from the Aiea 39 - the Hurricanes were able to force the OT when fullback Darrius Lopez punched into the end zone from the 1 and when backup Brandon Cambra hit Preston Wallace-Williams in the back of the end zone for the 2-point conversion that tied the game at 14 with 1:10 left.

"We should've kept the momentum," Aiea coach Wendell Say said of Kapolei's game-tying drive. "Those penalties killed us."

Aiea dropped to 1-2 overall and Friday's game was its first in the OIA Red West.

The interference penalty looked like both players were jumping for the pass. But Say said it would not be worth spending a timeout to discuss a judgment call that is unlikely to be reversed.

On its ensuing possession, Aiea got near midfield before losing the ball on downs. Kapolei managed a short pass in the final seven seconds before time ran out in regulation.

In high school overtime in Hawaii, each team starts from the defense's 20 with a chance to make one first down before scoring.

Kapolei had the first crack, but lost the ball on downs after coming up two yards short on fourth-and-3 at the 13.

Aiea reached the 12, but White had a 30-yard field goal try blocked, sending the game into the second overtime.

Aiea went up first, but White's 31-yard field goal try went wide left; Kapolei failed to score when Begonia's 38-yarder was blocked.

In the third overtime, Kapolei went first and faced fourth-and-5 at the 15. Begonia made his 30-yarder.

Aiea had the final crack before coming up with fourth-and-goal at the 5. An encroachment penalty against Kapolei moved the ball to the 3, shortening White's field goal try by four yards. But the kick hooked left.

After a scoreless first quarter, Kapolei drew the first break of the game when an Aiea long snap in punt formation skipped to the punter, whose knee touched the ground at the Aiea 31. That's where Lopez found a hole up the middle for a 31-yard TD. Demiana Gerber missed the PAT to keep Kapolei's lead at 6-0 with 8:46 left in the half.

Aiea cashed in on a Kapolei fumble in the third quarter at the Hurricanes' 28, setting up Douglas Tautua's one-yard TD run. White's PAT gave Na Alii a 7-6 lead.

Aiea got what it hoped would be an insurance score, when Maeva returned a fumble 34 yards for a TD to make it 14-6 with 2:30 left, only to see the Hurricanes tie it up on their ensuring series.

Quarterbacks from both team labored against strong defensive efforts of both teams. Kapolei starter Trey Kamachi-Allen had an ankle issue and was replaced by Cambra. Cambra completed on 2 of 7 passes for 24 yards, but the 24-yarder came on the play before Lopez's second TD of the game.

Aiea started with Duke Spencer, but eventually he shared time with Isaiah Fonoti. The combined to complete 5 of 14 passes for five yards.

"Right now, nobody's stepping ahead," Say said. "It's really tough. Right now, it's a toss up (between the two)."

Hernandez said he has been searching for a field-goal kicker and Begonia looked the best at practice.

"We gave this kid an audition and he made the most of it," Hernandez said.

And Hernandez's luck just seemed to carry on. His son, Zachary, plays for Punahou, which is in San Diego this weekend to play Vista High. Hernandez said he originally was scheduled to catch the red eye. His wife, however, changed his flight to Saturday morning.

"Because she's a smart woman, she changed it to Saturday A.M.," Hernandez said. "It's a good thing she did."

Hernandez said former Kapolei QB Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada, who is stationed in the San Diego area, will attend the game with him. He said Kaheaku-Enhada is a U.S. Marine first lieutenant.
