Long-time ILH rivalry heads Friday's slate of games

An old-time rivalry within the Interscholastic League of Honolulu will unfold once again as Kamehameha, ranked sixth in this week's ScoringLive Football Power Rankings, takes to the field against No. 2 Saint Louis at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Aloha Stadium.

The game will be preceded by an ILH Division II game between No. 8 Iolani and Damien at 5 p.m. Both games will be carried live on AM 1500 on the radio.

While the ILH opens its regular season in Halawa, the Oahu Interscholastic Association also has several games on the slate Friday that could heavily impact its playoff picture. In the Red West Conference, unranked Kapolei visits 10th-ranked Aiea and Mililani takes to the road against Waianae, while in the Red East No. 1 Kahuku hopes to stay unbeaten against winless Kaiser.

Also, Baldwin and Lahainaluna kickoff the Maui Interscholastic League with a 7 p.m. meeting at Wailuku's War Memorial Stadium.

INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU

No. 6 Kamehameha vs. No. 2 Saint Louis, 7:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium (AM 1500 radio)

The Warriors (1-2) picked up their first victory of the year with a 31-14 road win at Radford last week after opening with losses to Farrington and Kahuku. Kamehameha led 21-14 at the half against the Governors, but allowed a pair of third-quarter special teams scores and lost 26-21. A week later, it held an early 3-0 lead on the top-ranked Red Raiders, but could muster just 153 offensive yards and fell, 13-3. In last week's win over the Rams, junior running back Tyler Meditz led the way with 143 yards on 14 rushes and an 80-yard touchdown run. Quarterbacks Cid Camanse-Stevens and Nephi Stevens combined for an efficient 10-of-15 passing for 140 yards.

The Crusaders (3-0) have improved with each game, scoring 106 points in its last two outings, while allowing just 20. Junior quarterback Kawai Mook-Garcia leads the offense, which is averaging over 416 yards per game. Mook-Garcia threw touchdown passes of 59 and 47 yards and ran in a 1-yard score in last week's win over Mililani. Running back Kamana Pimental is second in the state in rushing yards with 376 on just 37 carries, including five touchdowns. He burned the Trojans' defense for 171 yards on 17 rushes and scored on a pair of two-yard runs. Saint Louis' defense is allowing just 11 points and 206 yards per game, despite allowing 359 pass yards against Mililani. Senior defensive end Kalei Auelua recorded three sacks and returned a fumble 90 yards for a touchdown last week.

No. 8 Iolani vs. Damien, 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium (AM1500 radio)

The Raiders (2-1) will finally see its first Division II opponents after opening its schedule with Radford, Farrington and Waianae. Junior quarterback Reece Foy was 23-of-31 passing for 295 yards with three TDs and no picks in last week's 21-14 win over the Seariders. While Iolani's defense is allowing a stingy 68 pass yards a game, opponents have averaged over 274 rush yards each time out - a number that is undoubtedly inflated due to the 443 ground yards that the Governors put up in a 42-7 win. The Monarchs (0-2) have struggled offensively since losing quarterback Alan Mohika to a season-ending concussion in their first game of the season against Moanalua. Sophomore Sylas Choy has moved into the starting QB spot and was 14-of-29 for 62 yards in a 38-0 non-league loss at Leilehua last week.

OAHU INTERSCHOLASTIC ASSOCIATION

Red East Conference

Kailua at Roosevelt, 7 p.m.

The Surfriders (0-3 overall, 0-1 Red East) are still seeking their first win after losses to Kealakehe, Punahou and Kahuku. Quarterback Kahaku Iaea, a 6-foot-2, 233-pound junior, has completed 56 percent of his passes for 637 yards with four touchdowns against five interceptions. However, Kailua is averaging just over five yards rushing per game while allowing opponents an average of 312 yards of total offense. The Rough Riders (0-2 overall) have been outscored 62-0 and are coming off a bye week.

Kaiser at No. 1 Kahuku, 7 p.m.

The Cougars (1-2 overall, 0-1 Red East) are wrapping up a grueling three-game stretch that began with No. 2 Saint Louis, continued with No. 3 Farrington and concludes with top-ranked Kahuku. The Red Raiders (3-0 overall, 1-0 Red East), who begin a three-game homestand, get head coach Reggie Torres back from a 33-day suspension stemming from a incident involving a JV player during team camp.

Red West Conference

Mililani at Waianae, 7 p.m. (OC16)

The Trojans (1-2 overall, 0-1 Red West) and Seariders (0-3 overall, 0-1 Red West) meet in a pivotal league game at Raymond Torii Field. Both squads are coming off a loss to ILH teams last week: Mililani was taken apart by Saint Louis, 55-20, and Waianae fell to Iolani, 21-14. Running back Jaylen Mitchell may return from a high-ankle sprain that has kept him sidelined all year for the Seariders, who are averaging less than 10 points per game. Kaimi Wilson, who leads Mililani with 366 receiving yards, is expected to play after leaving the Saint Louis game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury.

Kapolei at No. 10 Aiea, 7 p.m.

The Hurricanes (1-2 overall, 0-1 Red West) would like to snap a two-game losing streak, including a 20-0 loss to Pac-Five last week, in which they committed seven turnovers. Quarterback Trey Kamachi, who accounted for 237 yards of total offense in a loss to Leilehua, was held to minus 16 yards rushing against the Wolf Pack. Na Alii (1-1), who are coming off a bye week, has been led by their defense. Opponents are averaging just 237 offensive yards and 11 points against Aiea.

White Conference

Kaimuki vs. Waialua at Kaiser, 5 p.m.

This game will be a meeting of Bulldogs at Kaiser Stadium. Kaimuki (3-0 overall, 2-0 White) is hoping to keep the momentum going while Waialua (0-2) is looking to turn things around. Kaimuki, which has been on the verge of cracking the ScoringLive Football Power Rankings, enjoyed essentially a bye week after Anuenue forfeited last week's meeting with the Bulldogs. Waialua has yet to find the end zone this season, having been outscored 67-0.

Anuenue vs. McKinley at Kaiser, 7 p.m.

The nightcap of the White Conference doubleheader at Kaiser will feature Na Koa (0-2) against the Tigers (1-2 overall, 0-2 White). McKinley, which has dropped its last two games, is hoping to regain some of the momentum it captured with a season-opening win over Division I-Castle. Anuenue returns to the field for the first time since Aug. 20, when it suffered a 47-6 loss to Pearl City to start its season.

MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE

Baldwin vs. Lahainaluna at War Memorial Stadium

The Bears (0-1) are coming off a 48-10 thrashing at the hands of Edison (Calif.) last week and open their league schedule against the Lunas (2-1), who have three games under their belts. After dropping its season opener against Pac-Five, Lahainaluna has beat Keaau and King Kekaulike.

NON-LEAGUE

Kealakehe at Honokaa, 7 p.m.

The past two Division I champions of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation will meet in a non-league contest along the Hamakua Coast. The Waveriders (1-1) edged Kailua, 36-34, to open the season, but fell to Kamehameha-Hawaii, 16-13, two weeks ago. The Dragons (2-1) are coming off a 63-0 rout of Kau, but were shutout, 31-0, at Waimea two weeks ago.
