KANE'OHE - From incoming eighth-grader Andrue Ala-Peahi to senior-to-be Devan Stubblefield, football players from around O'ahu and a strong contingent from Maui took their talents to Castle High for the 12th annual Pacific Island Athletic Alliance Under Armour combine.

Some 250 players were tested in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, bench press and two variations of agility drills. They were timed twice in the 40, one with a hand-held watch and the other electronically.

"It was pretty legit," Lahainaluna defensive lineman Hercules Mata'afa said. "There was laser timing (for the 40-yard dash). It was organized."

Mata'afa, who ran his 40 in 4.99 seconds and bench pressed 225 pounds 14 times, said he has a scholarship offer from Oregon and that Wisconsin has shown interest.

"It was a good blessing for us," Punahou senior-to-be lineman Semisi Uluave said.

Junior-to-be Uluave said this a multiple appearance for him. He said he felt stronger this year.

"Last year, I was hurt, I think because I was still growing," the 6-foot-5, 305-pound Uluave said. "I'm about done growing now."

The event wasn't only about testing. The players enjoyed the camaraderie.

"Everybody came out here to compete," Saint Louis receiver Devan Stubblefield said. "Sure enough, everyone had a good time."

Stubblefield, who will be a senior, has football offers from Hawai'i and Weber State. He said UH football coach Norm Chow made an offer with an added incentive that will allow him to tryout for the baseball team. Stubblefield played the outfield for the Crusaders.

Posting one of the faster 40 times was Stubblefield's team, slotback Alan Cui III, who recorded a 4.5.

"I was expecting to run a 4.7, because that's what I was usually running," said Cui, who will be a junior. "I guess today I pushed it hard. I felt a lot stronger coming out of the start."

The purpose for the combine is for exposure. Their test results will be available to colleges around the country.

"It's good for all of us who are trying to get our names out, to impress the coaches" said Cui, who just completed his third PIAA combine.

Attending his first combine as an eighth grader at 'Aiea Intermediate has prepared him each year.

"I figured it's the most important combine, so I have to train for it," Cui said. "You just don't show up and run. You have to put in the work."

After the combine, a number of players stayed for optional one-on-one drills.
