Despite big strides in extending reach, still much to be done

A few responses have trickled into my inbox commenting on the 'lack' of coverage ScoringLive provided for a few state tournament sports this Spring season.

Truth be told, they are completely right.

In a perfect situation, I would not have hesistated to staff Division II softball games on Maui one week and Division I baseball games back on the Valley Isle the next. We probably could have included Boys and Girls tennis while we were up there.

The reality is this though... we don't have those kind of resources, staff or monetary, to make it happen. I really wish we did, but that isn't the case, at least at present.

While we are truly, truly blessed to have a core of great corporate sponsors, as well as a dedicated group of reporters, photographers and others that pour in hundreds of hours of work outside of their 'real jobs' to help keep our machine running, there are limits to how far our reach can extend.

As cliche as it might sound, we do the best possible job at bringing the best possible coverage of High School sports in Hawaii we are able to, and continually work on improving that to the maximum extent our budget and staffing allow.

To that, the strides we have made to increase and broaden our statewide reach of HS athletics were I think very substantial, marked by a number of milestones in 2012-13:

> Full coverage (story, photos and video highlights) of a regular-season game played on Maui between Baldwin and Lahainaluna.

> Full-coverage (story and photos) of the Division II state football tournament first round game on Kauai.

> Full-coverage (story, photos and video highlights) of both state football tournament games on Hawaii island, a Division I contest at Kealakehe and a Division II matchup at Konawaena.

> A statewide contest that presented a pizza party to the winning football team that scored the most points via defense or special teams (won by Konawaena and Radford).

> Live streaming broadcasts of over 36 different events, including the HUB Goodwill Classic, Iolani Classic, state girls and boys basketball quarterfinals, PIAA signing ceremony, OIA girls water polo, Mililani Judo Invitational, and both Division I and II Boys Volleyball championship games.

> Full coverage (story and photos) of the Division I baseball title game on Maui (that was sadly rained-out).

Our ability to provide users with the best resource for HS sports in Hawaii is also bolstered through our internship program, which is open to high school and college students interested in gaining real-world experience in writing, photography or videography, as well as the SL community of users at large, through fans, former players or just about anyone else interested in contributing to our coverage blanket, even if just helping to report scores from games.

Because every bit of help, well, helps.

And with a roadmap for next year that includes a proposed 18 football games and at least 30 other live-streaming broadcasts, regular-season coverage on Maui and the Big Island for football, basketball and diamond sports, as well as a few other surprises, garnering the support from organizations or businesses large or small, will definitely help the SL machine run all the more efficiently.

Pardon this one last cliche, but, our vision and mission here at ScoringLive has and will always be to provide the best possible coverage of high school sports in Hawaii, and with the backing of you, our community of readers/users, I think it isn't unrealistic at all to think we can reach a goal of true statewide coverage of HS athletics in the 50th state.

And for a few individuals, I think the expectation is that it definitely be sooner rather than later.
