Showing that last week's win against Waianae was no fluke, Campbell stumped Punahou, 14-0, Friday in an interleague football matinee at Alexander Field.

The Sabers (3-0), ranked seventh in the ScoringLive Football Power Rankings, got fourth-quarter touchdown runs from quarterbacks Justin Tago and Isaac Hurd in a defensive struggle against the No. 3 Buffanblu (2-1).

"I'm so proud of our team, our coaches," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "Coming in, we knew Punahou was going to be a dog fight with their size, their speed."

Campbell's defense was solid as ever behind linebackers Giovanni Stevenson and Solomon Leaeno, who led the team with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. The Sabers got three turnovers on interceptions by Joshua Torres and Jyrelle Umali and a forced fumble by Donovan Poniatowski. Faamanuiaga Vee had a sack. Punahou finished with 159 yards in offense.

"The key for us was stop the run and make them pass," Stevenson said.

Punahou was frustrated by turnovers. Its first drive of the game was stopped at the Sabers' 21 on Poniatowski's forced fumble. The Sabers eventually had to punt, but Punahou lost the ball again when it muffed the punt. Quincy Marting's interception prevented the Sabers from doing any damage.

The Buffanbu were without UCLA-bound running back Steven Lakalaka, who was nursing a concussion. He did not suit for the game. Lakalaka said he will be able to make next week's trip to San Diego for a game against Vista, the defending CIF San Diego Section Division I champions.

The Sabers battled with the Buffanblu for three quarters before getting on the board on the first play of the fourth quarter when Tago rolled in for a one-yard TD run. It capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive that was boosted by a 60-yard reception to Aries Pihi, who finished with seven receptions for 145 yards.

Campbell scored on its next series on a 15-play, 87-yard drive that culminated on a six-yard TD run by Hurd, Tago's backup, with 5:14 left. Tago left the game three plays earlier with a pinched nerve in his neck after Punahou was called for roughing the passer on third-and-goal at the 13.

The Sabers' offensive line did an excellent job against the bigger Buffanblu defense with its 6-foot-7 and 6-8 ends, DeForest Buckner and Luke Kaumatele, who would leave the game with an apparent knee injury, coach Kale Ane said. The Sabers rolled up 345 yards.

Left tackle Joey Choi didn't let Buckner touch the Saber QBs. The 6-1, 275-pound senior attended Brian Derby's renowned offensive linemen clinics over the summer and improved his play.

"He's trained numerous offensive tackles that went on to the NFL, went to college," Amosa said. "(His clinics) are a big help to us."

"My technique went up thousand (times)," Choi said. "Just going to that camp made me so much better. I thank him for all that."

It was a rare meeting between the schools. The only other time they met was in the 1996 preliminary game of the Oahu Prep Bowl. Punahou won, 33-25.

"They're good," Ane said of the Sabers. "Amosa's done a great job. I'm happy for him; I'm disappointed with us, but I'm happy for Amosa. His group has done a good job."

The Sabers resume Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West play at Leilehua next Saturday.
