No major upsets amongst any of the draws as the first day of competition came to a close at the Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA Tennis Championships at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii Tennis Center and Mauna Lani Racquet Club on the Big Island of Hawaii.
In Boys Singles, seeded players all advanced to the quarterfinals, including defending state champion Marcel Chan of Kamehameha-Kapalama, who defeated Leilehua's Brandon Bersola, 6-1, 6-1.
Seeded players also prevailed on the girls side of the draw, led by top seed and two-time defending state champ Alyssa Tobita of Mililani. Tobita won handily over Kahuku's Rachel Christensen, 6-0, 6-0.
Doubles play saw a few upsets, as the Punahou duo of Katherine Lee and Rachel Rosenfeld defeated 5th seeded combo of Taylor Lau and Krislyn Miyagawa of Mid Pacific, 6-3, 6-0 in the girls doubles round of 16, while Mililani's Ryan Hirokane and Davin Lee bounced 8th seeded Dior Derwenskus and Riley Inn of Iolani, 6-2, 6-2 in the boys draw.
Play concludes today at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii Tennis Center.
