Led by the speedy Alii Pedrina and the steady pitching of Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura, Campbell raced out to a 9-1 lead, then withstood a late rally by never-say-die Mililani, scoring 3 runs in the last of the sixth to come away with 13-3 mercy rule victory, and their first OIA division title since 1995.

"It's all momentum," said Pedrina of the convincing victory over the Trojans. "When you get into the state tournament it's the team that's hot. Record doesn't matter. As far as we're concerned, we're 0-0 right now."

Mililani struck first, as Campbell starter Villanueva-Hermosura issued a one-out walk to Kanoa Wong, and a sacrifice bunt by Troy Kakugawa moved Wong to third. Wong moved over to third on a Jensen Kim ground out, and then came home to score on an fielding error.

The lead was short-lived for the Trojans as the Sabers' Brannon Okinaka drew a walk and hustled around to score on a deep shot to left by Jasten Smeigh. Smeigh trotted home on Villanueva-Hermosura's single to give Campbell a 2-0 lead.

Campbell added three more runs in the bottom of the second, the first coming as Dylan Ramie earned a base-on-balls moved over to second following an infield bunt single by Jake Mendoza, and then came home on an errant throw by the Mililani pitcher trying to catch speedy leadoff hitter Alii Pedrina on another sacrifice bunt turned infield single.

"Our goal is always to score some runs early, but I thought we executed well, especially in our bunting situations." said Campbell head coach Rory Pico. "We bunted the ball pretty well, we ran the bases well and we put our runners in positions to get driven in. We had a lot of good at-bats today."

Pedrina moved over to second and pinch runner Dewayne Sprinkel to third on the errant throw, setting the table for Brannon Okinaka, who laid down a textbook squeeze bunt allowing Sprinkel to score. Pedrina showed off the wheels on the play, managing to motor from second, racing around third and beating the throw from first to make Okinaka's drag bunt one of the 2 RBI variety.

"It was a perfectly placed bunt," said Pedrina of the play. "The pitcher who fielded the ball wasn't really paying attention to me so I tried to be agressive on the basepaths."

"That was something we discussed in the huddle, we said if the situation calls for it." added Pico, of the the squeeze bunt play that yielded two big runs.

Then in the top of the third, following a two-out single by Troy Kakugawa, clean-up batter Jensen Kim roped a shot to left center tailing away from the centerfielder, but it was the fleet-footed Pedrina again, laying out to make a ridiculous leaping catch to retire the side.

"We shaded him away, and he pulled it. It was a solid hit but I was able to track it right off the bat." explained Pedrina.

The West top-seed Sabers added four more runs in the last of the third to take a commanding 9-1 lead, but in the top of the fourth, Mililani looked poised to get some runs back as a stand-up double by Jamesson Madrid was followed up by a line drive single by Trevor Inouye to put runners on first and second with just one out.

But the Sabers' defense came up big, as Villanueva-Hermosura got Kaiea Badiny to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to douse the Trojans' threat.

"Today my curveball and slider wasn't working too much, so I went with my fastball and changeup along with my splitter." said Villanueva-Hermosura, who went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, striking out 5 and walking two.

"Mililani is a great hitting team. I think Dorrien did a great job of keeping them off-balance with his off-speed pitches. He had some difficulties spotting his fastball at times but he made the pitches when he needed to." said Pico.

Mililani put together a rally in the top of the sixth, as back-to-back singles by Madrid and Inouye and a throwing error in left field allowed Ekolu Ramos to score from second. Kila Kapihe, who came on in relief of Villanueva-Hermosura, allowed a pinch-hit single to Sean Sonognini before getting Gavin Shon to strike out to finally retire the side.

The Sabers seemed intent to not give the Trojans any hope at a comeback, and followed suit at the dish, as Kila Kapihe and Mendoza started things off in the sixth with back-to-back singles. Sprinkel drew a one-out walk to load the bases for Pedrina, who collected his third HBP of the game to make the score 11-3.

Okinaka came up next and hit a grounder to third, allowing Mendoza to come home on the fielder's choice to being the Sabers to within one run of the title.

On the next at-bat, the first offering by Hironaka sailed over the catcher's head, allowing Sprinkel to slide in just ahead of the throw from the catcher Madrid back to home plate to end it.

Campbell rocket man Pedrina was 1-for-2 from the plate with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI, which included a stolen base and three hit-by-pitches.

The collective 11 hits in the win marked only the second time that the Sabers had reached that mark since a March 2 game against Aiea where Campbell scored 11 runs on 14 hits in a seven-inning affair.

Campbell was also able to extract some revenge on Mililani, who handed the Sabers its only loss of season exactly two weeks ago, a 6-2 loss to the Trojans in both teams' regular season finale.

Mililani's Madrid finished the evening with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, including a double.

"I cannot be more proud of these guys than I am right now. They worked so hard, from the offseason. To acccomplish what we set as one of our goals is a great feeling." remarked Pico.

"We want to try and carry this over (to the state tournament)." said Pico of the momentum of the win. "Its a ten-day layoff but we'll keep working."
