Taumua & Co. helped Govs rule the ground game

Might made right for Farrington in last Saturday's 42-7 interleague football victory at 'Iolani.

The Governors, who improved to 2-0 and are now at No. 4 in the ScoringLive Power Rankings, used a huge size advantage in the trenches to muscle their way to a whopping 510 yards of offense -- 443 of which came on the ground.

The biggest beneficiary was running back Tyler Taumua, who finished with 216 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, including 181 yards in the first half alone. Taumua, a 5 foot 10, 199-pound junior, made some nifty spin moves near the line of scrimmage and broke several tackles once in the secondary.

He had 79 yards on nine carries in the first quarter, scored on a 17-yard scamper three minutes into the second quarter and later got loose on a 58-yard run that set up a 12-yard TD pass from Travis Tamapua to Toma Barrett just before the half as Farrington went up, 36-7, at intermission.

Paving the way was a big and strong offensive line led by center Michael Boyd (6-0, 290), guards Mitchell Boyd (6'1, 314) and Colin Ka'alele (6-2, 361) and tackles AJ White (6-1, 297) and Charles Sataraka (6-1, 326).

The machine did not stop rolling in the second half, as Taumua added 35 yards on six carries in the third quarter and Abraham Silva -- yet another junior -- moved over from linebacker and did not skip a beat with 82 yards on 12 rushes in the fourth.

Silva, who broke off on a 48-yard run on third-and-2 from his own 34 midway through the second quarter, finished with 145 yards on just 15 carries. Senior fullback Tavale Masalosalo added 66 yards on only eight rushes.

Overall, the Govs averaged 10 yards per carry.
