Mililani, Konawaena tops seeds for boys' soccer tournaments


Defending champion Mililani is the top seed for the Outriggers Hotels & Resorts state boys' soccer tournaments that run this week.

The 12-team Division I tournament starts Wednesday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex, while the eight-team Division II tournament starts Thursday.

Konawaena is the top seed for Division II.

Below are the participants' histories.

DIVISION I

MILILANI TROJANS, top seed, OIA Red champion
Appearance: 24th
Record: 46-22-3, 29-18 in championship bracket, five titles
Note: Seeded first for eighth time

PUNAHOU BUFFANBLU, second seed, ILH champion
Appearance: 33rd
Record: 82-16-1, 75-14 in championship bracket, 18 titles
Note: Been to the title game 25 times in the 40-year history of the tournament

KEALAKEHE WAVERIDERS, third seed, BIIF champion
Appearance: 12th
Record: 11-17-2, 3-11 in championship bracket
Note: Never reached the title game

KAMEHAMEHA-MAUI, fourth seed, MIL champion
Appearance: Fifth
Record: 2-7-1, 1-4 in championship bracket
Note: Best finish was fourth in 2008

KAPOLEI HURRICANES, OIA Red runner-up
Appearance: Seventh
Record: 9-9-2, 8-6 in championship bracket
Note: Best finish was third in 2011

PEARL CITY CHARGERS, OIA Red third place
Appearance: 18th
Record: 26-27-1, 19-16 in championship bracket, one title
Note: Been to the title game twice, both against Punahou

CAMPBELL SABERS, OIA Red fourth place
Appearance: Third
Record: 3-4, 2-2 in championship bracket
Note: Lost both quarterfinals appearances on penalty-kick tie-breaker

KALANI FALCONS, OIA Red fifth place
Appearance:  Fourth
Record: 7-4, 7-3 in championship bracket
Note: Reached title game twice, losing both times

KAISER COUGARS, OIA Red sixth place
Appearance: 15th
Record: 20-19-5, 9-14 in championship bracket
Note: Reached title game once, losing to Punahou in 2011

IOLANI RAIDERS, ILH runner-up
Appearance:  27th
Record: 62-18-3, 54-18 in championship bracket, eight titles
Note: Has never faced Punahou in any other tier, except for the title game;  Punahou holds the lead, 7-4 (Of course, the league rivals are always in opposite brackets.)

HILO VIKINGS, BIIF runner-up
Appearance: 19th
Record: 14-31-2, 7-18 in championship bracket
Note: One title appearance (lost to Mililani in 2001)

KING KEKAULIKE NA ALII, MIL runner-up
Appearance: Eighth
Record: 1-11-1, 0-7 in championship bracket
Note: Lost play-in games twice, both to ILH teams

DIVISION II

KONAWAENA WILDCATS, top seed, BIIF champion
Appearance: 12th, third in D2
Record: 1-4, 0-2 in championship bracket (D2 only)
Note: Best finish was third in 1976, when only four teams were in the tournament. OIA, ILH and BIIF were the only leagues to participate.

KAPAA WARRIORS, second seed, KIF champion
Appearance: 18th
Record: 12-4, 11-4 in championship bracket (D2 only), one title
Note: Benefitted from D2, as they were 3-22-2 in 12 appearances when there was one tournament

KALAHEO MUSTANGS, third seed, OIA White champion

Record: Debut in D2
Note: 18-18-2, 13-10 in championship bracket, two titles in 13 D1 appearances.

SEABURY HALL SPARTANS, fourth seed, MIL champion
Appearance: Eighth, fifth in D2
Record: 4-7, 2-4 in championship bracket (D2 only)
Note: Beat Iolani in a play-in game in 2002, but lost in the first round.

MID-PACIFIC OWLS, ILH champion
Appearance: Sixth
Record: 12-4, 9-3 in championship bracket, two titles
Note: Never made the state tournament before D2 started in 2008

CHRISTIAN LIBERTY CANEFIRE, BIIF runner-up
Appearance: Fourth
Record: 4-4-1, 1-3 in championship bracket
Note: Best finish was third in 2012.

HAWAII PREP KA MAKANI, BIIF third place
Appearance: 26th, fourth in D2
Record: 4-5, 4-3 in championship bracket
Note: Made 22 state appearances before D2 started in 2008 (18-34-8)

FARRINGTON GOVERNORS, OIA White runner-up
Appearance: Second
Record: 0-2, 0-1 in championship bracket
Note: No state appearances before D2 started in 2008.
