Following an exciting 'Iolani/Punahou girls varsity basketball game, the nightcap matchup between 'Iolani and Kamehameha did not disappoint. Both teams played hard and it took three overtimes to determine the winner.

Free throws were a big difference in the game, as the Warriors hit 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the third overtime period to seal a 54-47 victory over the host Raiders.

"We needed it at the end, 11 of our last 12 free throws were made. All those reps in practice finally comes into fruition and when we needed it, we got it," said Kamehameha head coach Julian Nakanishi.

Makoa Camanse-Stevens rose to the occasion and scored 18 points for the Warriors. Cody Chai added 11 points and Noa Kinimaka scored 9 points and hit 2 three pointers, one of those threes sent the game into overtime.

"Well, from last year having Dyrbe (Enos) and two years ago having Micah Christenson, we need someone to step up and knock down shots. I have to say I’m so proud of my team with the way we performed, especially Noa (Kinimaka) hitting that clutch 3. He’s the reason we kept going into overtime and it kept us in this game. Austin (Gerard) played his game and Cody played well. I’m just proud of all my guys the way they played," said Camanse-Stevens.

In the first quarter, 'Iolani’s Erik Yamada hit a three pointer to open the game, 3-0. However, Kamehameha answered back and Makoa Camanse-Stevens banked a buzzer-beating three pointer to go up, 9-4.

In the second quarter, 'Iolani managed to outscore the Warriors, 10-3 and took a 14-12 lead going into halftime.

"Well they did a good job keeping us off balance. They played various kinds of zones and man defenses so it kept us on our toes so that was effective on their part," said Nakanishi.

In the third quarter, Kamehameha went up by 3, 17-14 after a pair of free throws from Makana Harrison. 'Iolani’s Zach Buscher tied the game up at 17 with a three pointer.

A three pointer by Kamehameha’s Noa Kinimaka made it, 20-17.

Buscher was fouled and threw up a wild shot that went in. He made the free throw to tie it at 20. However, Kamehameha had a slight edge going into the fourth quarter up 1, 21-20.

To start the fourth quarter, Buscher nailed a high-arching three pointer and had nice drive to the basket to put 'Iolani up, 25-21. Kamehameha immediately called a full timeout.

Kamehameha rallied and trailed, 31-29 after a rebound and putback layup by Kody Chai.

With 57.3 seconds left in the quarter, Kamehameha was whistled for a technical foul because there were six players on the floor. However, Kamehameha caught a break as Buscher missed both technical free throws.

A layup from Kason Smith-Bejgrowicz cut it to 32-31.

Kamehameha’s Austin Gerard was called for an intentional foul as he pushed Drew Uchiyama. Uchiyama only made 1 out of 2 free throws to make it, 33-31. A free throw from Ikaika Phillip put the Raiders up 3, 34-31 with 16.2 seconds remaining.

Kamehameha’s Noa Kinimaka made a three pointer in the left corner to tie the game at 34 before the buzzer sounded, forcing overtime.

"My teammates were able to get the offensive rebound and I just spotted up on the three-point line and my teammate Austin (Gerard) hit me on a wide open three. I saw the time running down and I had to shoot it," said Kinimaka.

In the first overtime, Kason Smith-Bejgrowicz made a basket to put the Warriors up, 36-34. 'Iolani’s Erik Yamada made two free throws to tie the game up at 36. 'Iolani tried to stall for the last shot, but it did not work. While inbounding the ball, Camanse-Stevens tried to throw a full court pass, but hit a ceiling light. 'Iolani received the ball under the basket with 0.2 seconds remaining. Zach Buscher made the shot, but the referees waved it off, forcing another overtime.

In the second overtime, Camanse-Stevens hit a long jumpshot to go up, 38-36. Buscher answered with a driving bank shot to tie it at 38. Gerard found a wide-open Chai in transition to go up, 40-38. Kamehameha’s Harrison hit 1-of-2 free throws to put the Warriors up, 42-38 and 'Iolani called timeout with 39.3 seconds. Phillip hit a baseline jumper to make it, 42-40. Kinimaka made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Warriors a three-point lead, 43-40. Ikaika Phillip nailed a three pointer with 5.3 seconds left. Gerard’s shot was blocked, sending the game into triple overtime.

In the third overtime, since both teams were in the double bonus, they took turns shooting free throws. Yamada's and Phillip’s free throws were the only points 'Iolani would score in the third overtime. 'Iolani’s jumpshots fell short and Kamehameha sank their free throws to put the game out of reach. Camanse-Stevens (4), Kinimaka (2), Gerard (2), Chai (2) and Kamal Olowofoyeku (1) contributed to Kamehameha’s 11 free throws.

Kamehameha plays Maryknoll (2/2) and Punahou (2/8) to close out the ILH season.

"We needed something to give us a lift to get into these two big games coming up. We want to finish out strong and you never know what could happen," said Nakanishi.

After a tough loss, 'Iolani dropped its third straight game.

"Effort was great and our guys really battled after a long day and a long game. At this point we’re trying to get better and better. We’re playing to play in the (ILH) tournament, our round-robin hopes are over so we have to be good come tournament time. Despite the loss, I think we got better tonight," said 'Iolani head coach Dean Shimamoto.

'Iolani’s Zach Buscher had 16 points and Ikaika Phillip added 13 points.
