In a thrilling overtime battle of unbeatens, the Kapolei Hurricanes spoiled host Pearl City on senior night. Kapolei remains undefeated in the OIA (7-0) while the Chargers dropped to (7-1) on the season.

"Both teams came to play. I told my boys, win or lose, it's going to be a good game," said Pearl City Head Coach Lionel Villarmia.

Pearl City's Sonny Glisson hit a trey to send the game into overtime with the score tied up at 42 a piece at the end of regulation. Daicorri Briscoe got the first points of overtime to put Pearl City up by two, but the Hurricanes closed the game with a 5-0 run to seal the deal.

"That was a big win for us," exclaimed Kapolei Head Coach Gary Ellison. "We needed that type of game. It's getting late in the season and we knew Pearl City; they're small, but they're scrappy and they shoot well, they're disciplined and play extremely good defense. Hats off to Pearl City; coach Lionel did an excellent job."

Kapolei's size advantage was instrumental to the Hurricanes victory as they dominated the boards for a total of 31 rebounds, accumulating 18 of those rebounds on the offensive side of the glass.

Pearl City fronted the Kapolei bigs in the 1st quarter forcing the Hurricane guards to take outside shots rather than feed the post. This was all for naught though as the Kapolei bigs were able to get their shot attempts off of their teammates misses, grabbing nine offensive rebounds in the 1st quarter.

The score was tied after the first period and through majority of the second period but the Hurricanes were able to rattle a 6-0 run to close the first half. Dorian Antonio-Martos hit a trey and two free throws to give Kapolei a 21-13 lead heading into the break.

"The second quarter we wasn't patient in our offense," expressed Villarmia. "They scored and they wanted to go down and score."

Not to let the game get away from themselves, Pearl City started the second half guns a-blazing. The Chargers used their speed to neutralize the size advantage that Kapolei had over them. Glisson used a nifty bounce pass to Issac Amorin on the fast break opportunity for the first points of the game. Amorin led the scoring charge for the Chargers with a game high 17 points. He also had six rebounds, an assist and two steals.

"Up in Hilo, he (Amorin) was tearing it up," exclaimed Villarmia. "But when we came back he got into a slump and I've been challenging him."

Pearl City's speed was also evident with their ability to gather loose balls on defense. The Chargers finished with a grand total of 18 steals, which was led by Glisson who had seven. Because of the extra possessions, Pearl City was able to take the lead 28-26 with a 15-4 run.

"My guards are quick," said Villarmia. "My first five we got good team speed; no more height but we gonna man up on anybody and we trust each other to get each other's back on the help."

Kapolei would go on to score the last five points of the third period with Christopher Dillard's euro step drive to the hoop and a Curtis Tavares three-pointer to give the 'Canes a 31-28 lead at the end of three quarters.

Amorin started the fourth quarter with a trey but Kapolei continued to make shots to keep Pearl City at bay extending their lead to five with less than three minutes to play in regulation. The Chargers cut the lead to one with a tough jumper by Zach Kaya but an Elijah Gipson put back gave Kapolei a 42-39 lead with under a minute to play. Gipson finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block.

Glisson didn't have a great shooting night for the Chargers (1 of 9 from the field), but he shot the biggest shot of the night for the home team. Receiving a cross court pass from teammate Reymart Rosario, Glisson hit a trey from the wing to tie the game with 36.4 left in regulation.

On the ensuing possession, Kapolei dribbled out the game clock and called time-out with 8.1 remaining, ensuring that they would get the last shot of the game. Out of the timeout, the ball was placed in the hands of Tavares and he found an apparent open lane for the game winning shot. Luckily for Pearl City, Tavares tripped on his way to the hoop and the game was heading to overtime.

Briscoe got a quick steal and went coast to coast to put the Chargers up by two but Dillard responded with a deep three to give Kapolei a one point lead. Neither team was able to generate any offense for the remainder of the extra period until the final minute.

With a slim lead, Kapolei had a chance to extend it with 45.5 remaining in overtime. The Chargers played good defense to force Kapolei to take a contested shot that rimmed out of the rim. Unfortunately for Pearl City, the Hurricanes got back to back offensive rebounds and the Chargers were forced to foul trailing 45-44, with 12.2 left in extra time.

Gipson would sink both free throws to give Kapolei a 47-44 lead. Amorin would miss a prayer three-pointer at the other end and the Hurricanes went out to win by three.

Even though the win gave Kapolei sole possession of first place in the Red West, Coach Glisson still has his team looking forward. "Right now we still got a long way to go. We still got Waianae, they're playing excellent. Campbell's playing tough; Leilehua they playing tough so we not finished yet. We got a long way to go and we can't take anyone lightly."

Dillard finished with 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals for the 'Canes. Tavares also pitched in with 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals to give Kapolei three players in double figures.
