KAPOLEI - CJ Harvey scored two goals - including the game winner - to lift Kapolei to a 3-2 overtime win over Kaiser in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Tournament quarterfinal Wednesday.

In the 87th minute, Harvey sent the co-Western Division champion Hurricanes into Thursday's semifinal round with a header off of an assist by Marcelo Dadino on a free kick. A crowd of about 250 at Kapolei High School saw the hosts improve to 10-0-1 overall in winning their eighth straight. Kapolei will play West third-seed Pearl City (9-3) in a 7 p.m. semifinal Thursday at Kaiser.

The other West co-champion Mililani (10-0-1) will meet West fourth-seed Campbell (7-3-1) in the 5:30 p.m. semifinal preceeding the Kapolei-Pearl City contest. All four semifinalists punched their tickets to the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I State Championships in two weeks. The top six teams from the OIA earn a berth in the 12-team state tournament.

The Hurricanes built a 2-0 first-half lead off Dylan Orian's goal off a corner kick from Max Wren in the 19th minute and Harvey's first goal - which came off an assist from Makaio Hamilton - in the 31st minute. However, the Cougars rallied to tie it with goals by Sylas Keb in 37th minute and Cody Kuge's 58th minute goal. Kai Kinoshita and Michah Mokulehua assisted on Ken's and Kuge's goals, respectively.

"Honestly, we're a little disappointed that we allowed them to get back into the game after we took that 2-0 lead," Hurricanes' co-head coach Ryan Lau said. "Obviously we're very happy with the result, because the importance of today is qualifying for the state tournament in two weeks. Like we said, the main goal for this whole week was to qualify for the state tournament in two weeks and then what we want to do with the rest of the week is build and get ourselves prepared for the state tournament."

The winning goal came off a set play that was implemented just a day earlier.

"It was supposed to be three of us standing offsides and we checked back to the 18-yard (line) where everybody was standing and we ran back," Harvey explained. "When we're doing that, we're protecting all the runners from protecting our guys and nobodies marking us because they're thinking we're offsides and we're not going to do anything. So me and Dylan (Orian) were wide open and I just headed it in."

Harvey said they ran the play in practice "five times, maybe."

Hurricanes' co-head coach Ryan Lau praised his team's execution of the play.

"You know what's funny is that particular play, we first introduced it and worked on it yesterday and that was actually the first time that we had a free kick from 30 yards and in tonight and we executed, so I'm very pleased with that," Lau said.

Just minutes before the winning goal, the Cougars had a golden scoring chance come and go. A well-placed, long pass inside the goalie box bounced around in front of the goal, but Kaiser was unable to find the goal against Kapolei goalkeeper Aldo Ramirez. On the Hurricanes' transition, a Kaiser defender was whistled for a foul and sent off after he grabbed the jersey of a Kapolei attacker who had him beat.

"We're very fortunate we had that defense play before the game-winning goal," Lau said. "Hopefully we learn from this - it's probably the first game that we allowed the dictation of the game to change the way it did - so hopefully we learn from this and it'll help us down the road."

Dadino followed with his assist to Harvey for the game winner on the ensuing free kick.

PEARL CITY 3, MOANALUA 0

Andrew Tanaka scored a goal in the first half and assisted on another in the second to lead Pearl City to a 3-0 shutout of Moanalua in a quarterfinal game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Tournament Wednesday.

A crowd of about 200 at Kapolei High School saw the West No. 3 seed Chargers improve to 9-3 and advance to Thursday's semifinal round, where they will play Kapolei at 7 p.m. at Kaiser. The Hurricanes beat Kaiser, 2-1, in a quarterfinal game Wednesday.

"When we had our opportunities we finished and that was the difference right there," Pearl City head coach Randy Shinn said. "The boys worked hard, they earned it and I'm proud of them."

With the win, the Chargers earned one of the OIA's six berths into the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Divison I Boys Soccer State Championships in two weeks.

"It's a big weight lifted off of us," said Tanaka, a junior forward. "Making it to states was one of our goals this year."

Moanalua controlled much of the first-half possession, but was unable to capitalize on numerous scoring chances.

A shot from inside the 18-yard box in the first five minutes of the game was saved by Pearl City goalkeeper, Jared Lewis. About 10 minutes later, a Moanalua header went over the head of Lewis, but just over the crossbar.

Tanaka got the scoring started in the 32nd minutes off a long pass down the left sideline. He collected the pass about 30 yards out and dribbled to within 10 yards before firing a left-footed past the Kapolei goalkeeper.

"I just saw it was wide open in front of me," Tanaka said. "They just played a beautiful ball to me - I don't know who it was, but it was a beautiful ball - I just settled, looked up and finished."

Pearl City held a 1-0 lead at halftime and picked up in the second half where it left off in the first.
In the 53rd minute, Christian Nakabayashi gave Pearl City a 2-0 lead when he booted in a corner kick from Tanaka.

"It was a set play, we always work on it in practice," Tanaka said. "It was a great finish by Christian."

Carter Casuga closed out the scoring when his one-timer from just in front of the goal, off a cross from Paul Enriquez, found the back of the net in the 68th minute.

"We didn't have good offense in the second half," Moanalua coach Spencer Machado said. "In the first half, we should have scored with as many corner kicks and opportunities that we had, but we didn't score and in the second half they came back strong. Pearl City had a good transition game, give them credit. Their two forwards play really well together."

Tanaka, for one, did not anticipate the wide margin of victory.

"I was expecting a close game, 3-0 is kind of a surprise to me," he said.

Shinn said his team relished another shot at Moanalua, who beat his team in both the OIA and State tournaments in recent years.

"It's a huge relief," Shinn said. "One of our goals was to get to states, one of our goals was to beat Moanalua - because this was the first time we beat them in three tries - so finally to beat them was a monkey off our backs and our next goal is to win again (Thursday) night."

Na Menehune, who saw their six-game winning streak snapped, had not played a game in 11 days. While Pearl City beat Castle, 2-0, in a first-round game Tuesday, Moanalua had a bye.

Despite the lengthy layoff, Machado offered no excuse.

"It might have taken a toll, but still yet, you've got to play," he said.

The East runner-up Na Menehune fell to 8-3 and will play Kaiser in a 5:30 p.m. elimination game at Kailua Thursday.

"We've got to win. I told it to them as simple as can be: You win you're in, you lose you're out," Machado said.

MILILANI 3, KAHUKU 2 (2OT)

Jeremy Laguana scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime to help the Trojans (10-0-1) hold off the Red Raiders (7-4-1). Ryan Carlomany and Evan Wilson also scored for Mililani, who drew the West second seed after tying for the regular division title with Kapolei. Kekahu Aluli scored both goals for the Kahuku, who will play Kalani in a 7 p.m. elimination game Thursday at Kailua.

CAMPBELL 1, KALANI 0 (PKs, 5-3)

The Sabers (8-3-1) converted all five of their penalty kicks while the Falcons (9-1-1) made good on three to upset the Eastern Division champions. Campbell, the West no. 4 seed, will play Mililani in a semifinal Thursday while Kalani must play Kahuku in an elimination game.
