Kahuku, Campbell advance on penalty kicks


Kahuku and Campbell won by penalty-kick tie-breakers to advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red boys' soccer tournament.

Kahuku beat Radford, 2-1, while Campbell outlasted Kailua, 4-3, with a 5-4 edge in penalty kicks in opening-round action Tuesday at Carelton E. Weimer Athletic Field. The penalty kick score for the Kahuku-Radford game was unavailable.

At Pearl City's Bino Neves Stadium Tuesday, host Pearl City beat Castle, 2-0, and Kaiser defeated 'Aiea, 4-1.

In quarterfinals Wednesday at Kapolei, Pearl City will meet East second seed Moanalua at 5:30 p.m. and Kaiser will take on West top seed Kapolei at 7 p.m.

At Kaiser, Kahuku will battle West second seed Mililani at 5:30 p.m. and Campbell will take on East champion Kalani at 7 p.m.

The quarterfinal winners advance to Thursday's semifinals at Kaiser, while the losers drop to the fifth-place bracket Thursday at Kailua.

In the White tournament at Nanakuli Tuesday, McKinley beat Nanakuli, 2-1, in overtime, and Farrington downed Waipahu, 1-0, in double overtime. Overtime periods are sudden death.

In semifinals Wednesday at Kailua, Farrington plays Wai'anae at 5:30 p.m. and McKinley takes on Kalaheo at 7 p.m. The winners advance to Friday's championship at Kaiser and secure Division II state tournament berths. The losers will be done for the season.

Note:  Kapolei moved up to No. 33 in the Elite Soccer Report Top 50, according to the report's website. The Hurricanes were No. 42 last week.
