Though not by design, one of the most storied rivalries of the old Interscholastic League of Honolulu will be revived when Roosevelt hosts Punahou Aug. 12 in non-league prep football at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The game, which will be aired on OC16, is one of the highlights of the non-league season, which opens Aug. 11 with Leilehua playing Service (Alaska), 6 p.m. at Hugh Yoshida Stadium. The Rough Riders-Buffanblu match is part of the ILH-Oahu Interscholastic Association annual interleague schedule. It is the first time to two Makiki schools will meet since 1969, the last year public schools played in the ILH before moving to the OIA.The Punahou-Roosevelt meeting has a nostalgic touch with memories of the Paint Brush Trophy. The history of the trophy dates to 1948 and ended with the departure of Roosevelt to the OIA. The Paint Brush was a perpetual trophy that was given to the winner of their annual meetings. Punahou held a 17-9-1 advantage since the inception of the trophy. Overall, the Buffanblu lead the series, which started in 1932, with a 27-15-2 record.According to story by then-Star-Bulletin reporter Rod Ohira, the Paint Brush Trophy was initiated because of acts of vandalism, usually with paint, between the neighboring schools. Roosevelt's football field was painted with Punahou colors; red paint (one of Roosevelt's colors) was dumped in Punahou's pool. To curtail the vandalism, the perpetual trophy was started in 1948.Punahou coach Kale Ane said there hasn't been any word yet on whether the trophy will be up for grabs when the teams meet in a few weeks. The trophy is stored at Punahou's Cooke Library.Ane, a 1971 Punahou graduate, played in the last Paint Brush Trophy game in 1969, when he was a junior. (The football season is always the year before a senior's graduating year.)The Punahou-Roosevelt game is one of four scheduled rivalry trophy games this season. Also on Aug. 12, Campbell will travel to Waipahu in a non-league game to play for the Cane Knife Trophy. Both schools are in communities that had history in the sugar industry.Kaimuki will play Kalani Sept. 23 at Kaiser in an OIA White game for the Calabash Bowl. That rivalry was established when both were members of the ILH.Leilehua will host Radford Sept. 24 in an OIA Red West contest for the Spirit of Freedom Bowl, as both schools are from armed services communities. The newest perpetual trophy is The Hammer, which goes to the winner of the Kailua-Castle game. The tradition was started in 2009, when Hardware Hawaii donated a koa trophy to celebrate the rivalry. In another old ILH rivalry game, Farrington will play Kamehameha Aug. 13 at Kaiser. Farrington will celebrate the school's 75th anniversary by honoring its 1965 team that beat Kamehameha, 16-6, for the ILH championship.Farrington athletic director Harold Tanaka said members of that title team will serve as honorary captains for the game. He said there will be a reunion dinner during the 4 p.m. JV game for the Farrington and Kamehameha players from that 1965 game.Farrington beat Kamehameha, 21-12, last year in a non-league game, but the Warriors own the all-time series lead at 36-19. Kamehameha held a 23-14 edge when the public schools left the ILH to join the OIA in 1970. Since then, the schools have met only in preseason or non-league games with the Warriors holding a 13-5 lead.In other notable non-league contests, Kahuku will host Waianae Aug. 12; and defending Division I state champion Saint Louis will travel to Aiea Aug. 13.Also, Kahuku will play Kamehameha Aug. 20 at Aloha Stadium and Edison (California) will play Baldwin Aug. 26 at Maui's War Memorial Stadium. The 48th annual Father Bray Classic is set for Aug. 13 at Aloha Stadium. Kapaa will play Kalani at 4:45 p.m., while host Iolani will take on Radford at 7:30 p.m.Non-League ScheduleThursday, Aug. 11Service (AK) at Leilehua, 6 p.m. (OC 16)Friday, Aug. 12JV 5 p.m., varsity to follow, unless notedCampbell at WaipahuPearl City at KapoleiMcKinley at CastleMililani at MoanaluaWaianae at KahukuPunahou at Roosevelt (OC 16)Nanakuli at KaiserHilo at HonokaaKauai at Kamehameha-HI, 6 p.m.Saturday, Aug. 13JV 4 p.m., varsity to follow, unless notedSaint Louis at Aiea (OC 16)Kamehameha vs. Farrington at KaiserPac-Five at Lahainaluna, 1:30 p.m.Kailua at Kealakehe, 7 p.m.Kaimuki at Hawaii Prep, 2 p.m.Konawaena at Keaau, 3 p.m. JV, varsity to followWaimea vs. Waiakea, 7 p.m. at Wong Stadium48th Father Bray Classic at Aloha StadiumKapaa vs Kalani, 4:45 p.m.Radford vs. Iolani, 7:30 p.m.Friday, Aug. 19JV 5 p.m., varsity to follow, unless notedAiea at RooseveltPunahou at KailuaSaint Louis at KaiserHawaii Prep at HiloDamien at Moanalua, 7 p.m. (OC 16)Honokaa vs. Waimea at Hanapepe Stadium, 7 p.m.Kamehameha-Maui vs. Kapaa, 7 p.m. at Vidinha StadiumSaturday, Aug 20JV 4 p.m., varsity to followKahuku vs. Kamehameha at Aloha StadiumKamehameha-HI at KealakeheKeaau at Lahainaluna, 1:30 p.m.Pac-Five at Castle, 7 p.m. (OC 16)Farrington at Iolani, 2 p.m.Maui vs. Waiakea at Wong Stadium, 3 p.m.King Kekaulike vs. Kauai, 7:30 p.m. at Vidinha StadiumFriday, Aug. 26JV 5 p.m., varsity to followHilo at KonawaenaKamehameha at Radford, JV 4 p.m., varsity to follow (OC 16)Damien at Leilehua 7 p.m.Pac-Five at Kapolei, 6 p.m.Campbell at Punahou, 3:15 p.m.Edison (CA) vs. Baldwin at War Memorial, 7 p.m.Saturday, Aug. 27JV 4 p.m., varsity to followSaint Louis at Mililani (OC 16)Kamehameha at Keaau, 3 p.m. JV, varsity to followWaianae at Iolani, 2 p.m.Mount Douglas (Canada) vs. Kapaa, 7 p.m. at Vidinha StadiumFriday, Sept. 2Kealakehe at Honokaa, 5 p.m. JV, varsity to follow
