HALAWA - Kasey Carrier rushed for two scores, helping New Mexico spoil Hawaii's homecoming as the Lobos racked up 332 total rushing yards in a 35-23 victory Saturday night. With the loss to New Mexico, the Warriors dropped to 1-5 for the season (0-3 Mountain West).

"We really need to fight smarter," said Warriors coach Norm Chow. "Just got to keep fighting, really nothing else to say."

New Mexico got on the board about three minutes into the first quarter, as junior running back Kasey Carrier took the handoff, avoided would-be tacklers, and bounced his way outside for a 23-yard score. The point after kick by junior Justus Adams put the game at 7-0.

"We don't put blame on anybody," said Chow. "(We need to) be technically better."

A fumble on the next New Mexico kick-off would set up the next score for the Lobos. A fake handoff opened up sophomore receiver SaQwan Edwards for a six-yard pitch and score, and the point after set the score at 14-0 at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter.

"I turned the ball over, I'm not going to make an excuse about it," said Mike Edwards, defensive back for the Warriors. "It's tough, but got to move on."

Carrier scored on the following drive with a option pitch for a one-yard score, putting the Lobos up 21-0 at the 12:24 mark of the second quarter.

New Mexico ended the half with 199 total yards of offense.

"Credit to them (New Mexico)," said Chow. "Trying to find out the reason why we come out so slow to start the ball game. "

Carrier ended the night with 35 carries for 161 yards (4.6 average per carry) and two touchdowns.

Hawaii managed to put points on the board the following two New Mexico scores before heading into the locker room, as Warriors quarter back Sean Schroeder found a wide open Scott Harding in stride for a 51-yard score that came with 5:55 left to go until halftime.

"It was nice to move the ball," said Schroeder, who finished the night 20 for 42 on pass attempts for 272 yards passing. "All season I think we've had good red zone production."

Sophomore kicker Tyler Hadden would boot in the last points for the Warriors on a 49-yard field goal coming with 19 seconds left until the half. The field goal was a season long for Hadden.

Lobos quarterback Cole Gautsche got in on the rushing attack during the third quarter. The freshmen from New Mexico faked a handoff and took off for a 76-yard touchdown, the longest scoring play from a Hawaii opponent this season.

"Just learn from this and continue to work hard. That's what we got to do," said Edwards. "Go back to the fundamentals of football."

Warriors responded on the ensuing kick-off with a 100-yard return by junior Mike Edwards. The star return man for Hawaii weaved his way through the New Mexico defenders and went untouched on his way to his second kick return for a score on the season. Edwards's touchdown put the score at 28-17 at the 4:40 mark of the third period.

"Everybody gave a lot of effort," said Edwards. "More importantly, a lot of people executed today and that's what we showed as a team."

Edwards finished the night with five returns for 178 yards and one touchdown.

Hawaii running back John Lister powered his way through the Lobos defense for the Warriors next score. At the 9:49 mark of the fourth, the sophomore plunged his way for a one-yard touchdown. A failed two point conversion left the margin 28-23 in favor of New Mexico.

"The tough part about it is we knew we were close," said Edwards. "Hardest loss as of this far."

Senior quarterback B.R. Holbrook found the end-zone for the next Lobos score. Holbrook called his own number on a five-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown, capping off a nine play drive that lasted nine minutes and 49 seconds.

"A close game like this, just got to continue to work," said Edwards. "It's tough but we got to get it done."

New Mexico ran out the clock for the last minutes of the game, improving to 1-1 in conference play.

Hawaii plans to rest up going into the bye week, in preparation for a road game against Colorado State.
