Nishioka's 15-catch performance big for Iolani

Tanner Nishioka put up career numbers catching the football in Iolani's comeback attempt against Kamehameha, but for the senior wide receiver, it was his team's performance, not his own individual achievement that deserved the accolades.

"Well, I think it all started with our defense and our o-line. Actually our defense died for us out there, they played their hearts out and kept getting us the ball." said the 5-foot-11 Nishioka.

"Our o-line went up against one of the best d-lines in the state and they're one of the hardest working lines in the state... and even though they are a little undersized I wouldn't trade any of them."

And it was the Iolani front five that provided just enough protection for Foy to find Nishioka, early and often.

Following an Iolani recovery of a muffed punt deep in Kamehameha territory, quarterback Reece Foy connected with Nishioka from 14 yards out that gave the Raiders an early 7-0 advantage, and would find Nishioka twice more in the contest on strikes from 9 and 34 yards, to account for all three Iolani scores through the air.

"That night we had a good connection, and I guess we just got lucky a little bit." remarked Nishioka. "We've had a lot of years of experience together, as we've played since our sophomore year together, but it really was just a team win with our other receivers working hard as well."

Lucky or not, Nishioka's stat line against the Warriors, a gaudy 15 receptions for 176 yards and three touchdowns through the air and another score on a 6-yard rush, served to double his receptions, yards and touchdown totals in ILH play.

On the season, Nishioka, who is also attracting looks as a baseball prospect, is currently seventh among all Division II receivers, with 37 receptions for 444 yards and 9 touchdowns.
