Former UH Football Coach Dick Tomey will kick off Lessons on Leadership, a clinic for coaches and parents on Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, 6-8:30 p.m. at Dillingham Hall on the Punahou School campus. The event is free and open to the public; seating is unreserved.
 
Tomey will give the welcome address, followed by presentations from: Bob Coolen, UH head softball coach; Jeremy Edwards, executive director of SportsChallenge Leadership Academy; Bill Ferguson, USC head men’s volleyball coach; Jacqueline Hansen, health education instructor at Loyola Marymount University; and Amy Nakamoto, executive director of DC Scores. Discussion topics include leadership development, building resiliency, skill-level diversity and the structure of excellence.   
 
The event is sponsored by the Punahou School Athletics department in coordination with University of Hawai‘i Athletics, HHSAA, OIA, ILH and Hawai‘i Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
 

About the Panelists
 
Bob Coolen earned a master’s in education from Boston University and has served as head coach of the UH softball program since 1992, making him the third-longest tenured coach at the University. Under his leadership, his team made the NCAA tournament for the 10th time in 2012.
 
Jeremy Edwards co-founded the SportsChallenge Leadership and Education Alliance in 1996, and has facilitated more than 200 leadership and coaching workshops throughout the country for SportsChallenge and for Positive Coaching Alliance. Edwards, who holds a master’s degree from Stanford University School of Education, taught and coached in Washington, D.C., for 14 years before co-founding SportsChallenge.
 
Bill Ferguson just completed his sixth year as head coach of men’s volleyball at USC, where he’s guided his team three times to the NCAA Final Four. Before joining USC, Ferguson was one of the nation’s most successful junior volleyball coaches and club directors, coaching teams to 12 gold medals at national championships.
 
Jacqueline Hansen is a health education instructor at Loyola Marymount. She won the Boston Marathon in 1973, just one year after running her first marathon, and went on to win numerous marathon titles and set new world records. She has coached at every level, including high school, and is a tireless advocate for women’s long-distance running.
 
Amy Nakamoto is the executive director of DC Scores, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that offers after-school soccer and creative writing programs to 23 public elementary and middle schools. She earned a master’s in sports psychology from UNC-Greensboro and a master’s in education from U Penn, and has served as head coach for girls’ soccer at Bryn Mawr College.
 
Dick Tomey coached UH football for 10 seasons from 1977–1986 and is a member of the school’s Sports Circle of Honor. He led the team into the Western Athletic Conference in 1979 and to the program’s first national ranking in 1981. He also guided the Rainbow Warriors to a pair of runner-up finishes in the WAC and four seasons with seven-plus wins. More than 35 of Tomey’s coaching protégés are either in the National Football League or coaching at the NCAA FBS level.
