Tabuyo fueled Crusaders' win in ILH opener

Jeremy Tabuyo clearly has a penchant for opening up the regular season with a bang.

For the second time in as many years, the 5-foot-11 senior came up big in Saint Louis' first game in league play, leading the Crusaders' air attack in a 63-39 rout of Iolani at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium Saturday.

In last year's season opener, a 28-21 loss to Kamehameha on September 2, he accounted for all of the Saints' trips to the endzone against the Warriors, posting 7 receptions for 177 yards and 3 TDs.

This time around, Tabuyo racked up 123 yards of receiving on five receptions, including three for touchdowns once again, but one-upped his 2011 stat line by adding a fumble recovery in the end zone for a total of four scores against Iolani.

"I expected that out of myself. For our season opener, I wanted to show that I could be a leader on the field." said Tabuyo. "We wanted to make a statement because last year we didn't do so good, so we wanted to just come out with a win."

Tabuyo's highlight of the night came with just under three minutes to play in the half and Saint Louis set up at the Iolani 42. Quarterback Ryder Kuhns would find Tabuyo on a 7-yard out near the left sideline, and from there, Tabuyo would do the rest.

"I think Ryder (Kuhns) did a good job, but it started with the O-line, they had good protection and Ryder made a good read and you know he just gave me the ball and I did what I could with it." recalled Tabuyo.

After breaking an initial tackle, he would make a nifty outside-in juke move that would give the speedster the angle on a pair of defenders needed to break to the inside of the field.

"I saw the safety flying over and I saw the linebacker coming over so I just cut back and I just saw the endzone so I just went for it."

Then shaking off another tackle, Tabuyo would stride into the endzone for a score that would put the Crusaders up for good, 28-24.

Also playing a big factor in the success of Tabuyo and the Saint Louis offense against Iolani was clearly the running of senior tailback Adam Noga, who accounted for 147 yards on 20 carries and 3 touchdowns of his own.

"Adam is a great running back. He opens up the receivers because they can't play just the pass anymore, they gotta worry about the running game as well." Tabuyo said. "It takes a lot of pressure on the receivers."

And the Crusaders will look once again to get big contributions from Tabuyo, Noga and company in this Friday's showdown against No. 3 Punahou.

"I think this year we came together a little more as a team, and I think we just gelled good this season." Tabuyo said. "So its a big game for us, just so we can prove to ourselves that we are better than last year."
