Moanalua boys, Pearl City girls win state judo titles


Moanalua won its third consecutive boys title, while Pearl City claimed its first girls crown since 2008, as the OIA swept the HHSAA Judo State Championships held at the Stan Sheriff Center.

In  a closely contested boys bracket, Na Menehune bested Mililani by a 58 to 52 point count, followed by Kamehameha-Kapalama (42) in third.

On the girls side, Pearl City scored 71 points to win convincingly over three-time defending state champion Punahou (58) in second and Kapolei (47) in third.

'Iolani's Jordan Ng won the 108 pound weight division to win his third state title in four years, while Josh Terao of Mid-Pacific became a two-time state champion, winning the 132 pound weight divsion, as did Moanalua's Justin Fujiwara, who claimed the 198 pound weight division title and 220 pound weight division winner Dane Paihi-Pestano from Kamehameha-Kapalama.

Pearl City's Sanoe Spencer won her third consecutive state judo in the 220 pound weight division, joined by Punahou's Mindy Chow, who won the 139 pound weight division. Two-time state winners included Bree Rapoza from Kamehameha-Kapalama (122 lbs) and Tiara Kaye from Punahou (154 lbs).
