Makua Lani leads BIIF trio into Division II quarters


 



WAIPAHU -- Grace Choe and Tiffany Nakamura each scored a second-half goal yesterday afternoon to help Makua Lani break a 2-2 tie and defeat Waipahu, 4-2, in the first round of the JN Automotive Group/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Soccer State Championships.

The Lions -- whose campus is located on the slopes of Hualalai just outside Kailua, Kona -- improved to 5-9 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 1 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation DII champ Hawai'i Prep (9-2-1) in today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal on Field 9 at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Waipahu fell to (8-5-1) and into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket game against O'ahu Interscholastic Association rival Kalaheo (8-2-3), also on Field 9.

Choe and Nakamura scored in the 18th and 25th minutes, respectively, but the Marauders tied it up before halftime on goals by Jahna Tascon in the 25th and 32nd minutes. Chloe then gave Makua Lani the lead for good on a goal in the 51st minute and Nakamura added an insurance goal seven minutes later.


MID-PACIFIC 4, KALAHEO 1

Taylor Higa scored two goals in the first 15 minutes and AJ Johnson and Julie Khil added second-half goals for the Owls, who improved to 4-9 and will face No. 4 seed and Maui Interscholastic League DII champion Seabury Hall (8-7-1) in today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal on Field 10.

Higa scored in the 12th and 15th minutes; Johnson found the net two minutes into the second half and Khil scored in the 57th minute. All three players are sophomores.

Monique Ishikawa scored in the 66th minute for the Mustangs.


KAMEHAMEHA-HAWAI'I 2, ST. ANTHONY 0

Harper Hottendorf scored in the 10th minute and Cody Kuali'i added a goal in the 50th minute for the Warriors, who improved to 9-2-4 and will face No. 2 seed and OIA White Conference champ Leilehua (9-4) in today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal at Field 11.

The Trojans fell to 4-13 and into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket game against Radford (7-4-3) at Field 10.


HONOKA'A 3, RADFORD 0

Kimberly Kishimoto, Monica Carlos and Tialana Greenwell each scored for the Dragons, who improved to 7-5-2 and will face No. 3 seed Kaua'i High (6-0-1) in today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal at Field 12.

Kishimoto scored in the 14th minute, Carlos found the net in the 42nd minute and Greenwell scored in the 69th minute.
