It was a statement game for three-time defending champ Saint Louis, in the form of a wire-to-wire 53-39 win over top-ranked Punahou at home and on Senior Night to boot.

In the win, the third-ranked Crusaders held the Buffanblu to a season-low 39 points, a full 20 points below its season average.

"Just playing defense, that's a big key for us, that's our whole game," said Shancin Revuelto.

Caelan Fernando, Jiovanni Ramos and Revuelto combined for seven total steals, and defensively Saint Louis did work, particularly in the opening quarter, where the lead blossomed to 8-0 before Punahou was forced to call for time.

"We just really wanted to come out and dominate," said Fernando, "When we started out on that 8-0 run we had that momemtum and we wanted to carry that throughout the game."

"For me, I was just really trying to focus on the defensive side," he added. "That's what win us games, heart, hustle, the grit."

That lead eventually grew to 17-5 at the end of the first, and Punahou never found any kind of groove offensively. In fact, the largest spurt for the home team came on back-to-back baskets Dillon Kellner and James Taras in the fourth quarter.

What's more, Ayndra Uperesa-Thomas was held to just a single basket, a three-pointer from the left wing that came with 3:38 left in the fourth. Pupu Sepulona was tasked with guarding Uperesa-Thomas for much of the contest, and did well to close out on three point attempts as well as limiting chances in the low block.

"I played against Ayndra in a bunch of leagues and he's a really good player," remarked Revuelto. "But Pupu did a good job him tonight locking him down."

Speaking of Sepulona, he had a quiet night points-wise, scoring just nine points, but added five big assists, a game-high.

"He draws a lot of attention when he has the ball so it really opens it up for the rest of us," said Fernando. "He's got good court vision and he can make the tough passes."

Saint Louis scored right near their season average of 51 per game and nearly all five starters hit double figures. Reveulto led the way with 10 points and four rebounds, while Jordan Posiulai and Stone Kanoa each chipped in 10 more. Fernando had eight points to go along with two steals and two assists.

Taras had a game-high 17 points for the Buffanblu, including 9 in the second quarter alone.

Despite the loss, Punahou can still clinch the regular season title and an automatic berth to the Division I state tournament with a win at Mid-Pacific on Thursday, but a loss to Mid-Pacific, coupled with a win for Saint Louis at Maryknoll, would create a potential playoff game to decide first place.
