MANOA—Four Raider starters scored in double figures and No. 6 Iolani ended a three-game skid in emphatic fashion to rout No. 10 Mid-Pacific, 62-45, at Mills Gymnasium Thursday night.

After losing to No. 4 Maryknoll, 37-36 on Zion Milare's buzzer-beater on Tuesday, the Raiders (1-3) scored inside and out to get their first ILH Division I win of the season.

"Any win you can get in the ILH is an important win. This is the first one for us, but I'm extremely proud of the way our guys responded. That was a tough shot we had to endure on Tuesday, but I think it shows the heart of this team and I think that's one of the things we preach: heart and desire. They did a great job bouncing back," Iolani coach Ryan Hirata said.

Posts Mana Lau Kong (6-foot-5) and Luke Tobin (6-foot-4) each scored 15 points and their presence inside later opened perimeter shots for Ayden Goo (14 points) and Nela Taliauli (11 points), who combined to hit all seven of the Raiders' 3-pointers.

"Great team win for them, Mid-Pacific is a really good team as they beat Maryknoll. We have to continue to get better," Hirata said.

Riley Miura and Logan Mason each scored 10 as the Owls (1-3) dropped their second-straight game.

"This is a great group, they give me everything that they got. They got great attitudes," Mid-Pacific coach Robert Muroda-Shklov said.

Iolani attacked the rim as Darius Chizer and Logan Mason picked up fouls and the Raiders reached the bonus with 4:50 to go in the first quarter and hit 5 of their 7 free throw attempts to take a 11-5 lead.

"That's who are and we have some size. We have a game plan going into every single game and every single team in our league is tough so you have to have something you go to. I was happy executed the way that we did," Hirata said.

"We've been relatively safe in terms of fouls and this was the first game we had to deal with that adversity. I'm sure it was a big aspect of what they were trying to do," Muroda-Shklov said.

Taliauli hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to open the quarter and went ahead, 22-6, after Lau Kong and Tobin combined to score eight points from the blocks.

"Defensively is where it starts. Defense is something we preach as well and being able to rebound. When you get stops, you get more possessions and any team wants more possessions and I'm glad they did well," Hirata said.

Jacob Bow hit the Owls' first field goal of the quarter by converting a 3-point play at the 2:55 mark and Miura followed up with a 3-pointer to get within 10.

Iolani closed out the half on a 8-2 run on a 3-pointer from Taliauli, Tobin hit a left-handed drive, and Goo nailed a 3-pointer before the buzzer to lead, 30-14 at halftime.

"Outside in, inside out, the boys have to continue to build and get better. Every team in our league is really good, there are no days off," Hirata said.

The Raiders went up by as much as 19 off Goo's triple in the third, but Mason scored in transition and Mid-Pacific scored 11 of their 13 points from the free throw line and outscored Iolani, 13 to 9 in the quarter to cut the deficit down to 12.

Mid-Pacific went 20 for 25 (80 percent) from the free throw line while Iolani hit 9 of their 14 attempts.

"You saw at the end how it flipped and the way the free throws went. I told the guys, this is the epitome of a make or miss game. 3-of-21 from 3 and 25 percent from the field. Credit to their defense and our shot selection, but I thought we had good open looks that we didn't hit," Muroda-Shklov said.

Taliauli and Goo got loose to hit their final 3-pointers of the game in the fourth and Lau Kong scored seven points in the quarter. The Raiders led by as much as 24 points and both teams emptied their bench in the final two minutes.

"One disappointing thing about our defense is we fell asleep on two of their best shooters from the outside. No close outs or switches and that hurt us against Kamehameha and that hurt us tonight too. Our communication was off, it's tough to make up for it on the back end," Muroda-Shklov said.

Iolani closes the first part of the round robin against Kamehameha (1-3) on Saturday at 6 p.m. while Mid-Pacific goes to Punahou (4-0) at 4:30 p.m.

The Raiders and Owls play each other again on Jan. 23 at Iolani.
