Lime is jack of all trades for Cougars

Keagan Lime

Keagan Lime wears a lot of different hats for the Kaiser football team, but there's one intangible trait that makes the senior a special one in the eyes of his coach.

"The biggest thing about him is his competitive nature," Cougars coach Tim Seaman said of Lime, a 5-foot-7, 140-pound jack of all trades.

Lime is listed on the team roster as a wide receiver – where he has started since his sophomore season – but he also excels at cornerback on the defensive side of the ball. Furthermore, he has taken on an expanded role on special teams as a placekicker. Lime also handles kickoffs for the Cougars.

"He doesn't want to come off the field. He'll be out there as long as he can go. You'll see a lot of fire out of him; He's out there battling and that's what you want from your senior leaders," Seaman said.

Kaiser's come-from-behind 16-12 win over rival Kalani over the weekend was telling of just how much Lime means to the team. In addition to his six receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown, Lime also converted a 31-yard field goal and made a couple of tackles. He also averaged 45.2 yards on his four kickoffs, two of which he booted into the end zone for touchbacks.

Seaman said that with an injury to fellow senior wide receiver Donovan Reis – who also had a role in all three phases for the Cougars – Lime has taken it upon himself to account for more production.

"I don't want to say that he stepped into that role – it's a similar role, playing receiver, corner and on special teams – but Keagan has stepped up for us big time," Seaman said.

Lime has increased his workload each year. In five games as a sophomore in 2021, he posted 11 receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown. A year ago Lime recorded 46 catches for 647 yards and nine touchdowns. He also came up with three interceptions and earned second team All-OIA D2 recognition at both receiver and defensive back. Lime was an All-Hawaii Second Team selection at wide receiver.

"I wanna say midway through his junior year we needed some help in the defensive backfield and ever since then he's kind of stepped up and taken on that role offensively and defensively and then this year we're asking him to help us out on special teams as well," Seaman explained.

Lime's work has been fruitful through Kaiser's first three games of the season. He came up with six catches for 66 yards and a touchdown in a season-opening loss at Castle. The following week he tallied nine grabs for 110 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to Pearl City.

While Saturday's production was not out of the ordinary for Lime, the main difference was the result: Kaiser's first win of the year.

The Cougars improved to 1-2 overall and evened their in-division record to 1-1.

"We needed that win in the worst way and we're fortunate to get one," Seaman said.

Lime had a big hand in setting up his teammates for success Saturday night. All six of his receptions went for first downs; two of them moved the chains on third downs and three of them came on the Cougars' final possession that led to the go-ahead score, a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Sean Connell with 14 seconds remaining.

On the scoring drive, Lime pulled down passes of 15 and seven yards and later a 31-yard pick-up on third-and-9 to set-up first-and-goal from the Falcons' 3-yard line. Two plays later, Connell punched in the game-winner from a few yards out.

"When we were down in the fourth quarter, you could see that he took it up a notch in terms of making a couple big catches during that two-minute drive to put us in a position to score. In that situation, he just came up clutch and I mean, we have an expectation of him rising to the occasion and that's exactly what he did," Seaman said.

Lime's 31-yard field goal opened the scoring with 4:40 left in the first quarter. He caught a 32-yard TD pass from Connell midway through the second stanza and then kicked the ensuing extra point to give his team a 10-0 lead.

Seaman said that Lime can be animated at times, but is always well-liked and respected by his peers.

"Keagan is probably a little more vocal than our other guys. Our other guys are a little more on the quiet side, I would say, but Keagan likes to get in there and get things going a little bit. Off the field, he's a real personable young man; He's got an engaging personality and is easy to get along with."

Lime and the Cougars will look to make it back-to-back wins when they host Roosevelt (2-2 overall, 1-1 league) Saturday, 6 p.m. at Kaiser Stadium.
