Undersized Hawaii Baptist relied on grit, discipline and experience to edge taller and younger University Lab squad, 51-48, earning both a season sweep as well as assuring no less than a tie atop the ILH Division II standings.
"We just had to stay disciplined and trust what coach drew up and execute," said Eli Shibuya.
The junior guard had 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, including 10 of 11 made free throws, to help the seal the deal for the Eagles, who were outscored 34-23 in the final two quarters as the Jr. Bows mounted a comeback that came up just short.
The Eagles built a sneaky 14 point lead in the first 16 minutes of play, relying on well executed set plays its half court offense to counter the size and strength of the Jr. Bows. Jordan Qin battled under the basket all game long for a game-high nine rebounds, four of them offensive, helping keep possessions alive despite the disparity.
"The whole season coach has been preaching boxing out and playing hard from start to finish," said Qin. "I think this is the first game we played like that (for) a complete game so I'm proud of that."
His tenacity led to open looks on jump shots or cuts to the goal in Hawaii Baptist's guard heavy attack, exemplified by a beautiful high-low play the saw Qin recieve the pass at the post and then drop a pass downhill to a cutting Shibuya to open the fourth quarter.
Through much of the second half however, it appeared that momentum was swinging the way of the youthful Jr. Bows.
After being held scoreless in the first half, Trey Ambrozich came out of the intermission with a triple from the left corner to kick off the rally and knocked down two more threes in the fourth quarter to finish with 11 points.
Matt Shigetani hit a huge three point shot at the 2:15 mark of the fourth to push the lead back to 43-36, what would be the last field goal the Eagles would make in the game.
From there University Lab went into scramble mode, fouling to get the ball back hoping for misses at the line from Hawaii Baptist as well as three-point makes on the other end.
Koa Laboy added a bucket, Kenna Quitan and Ambrozich each hit threes down the stretch, but after each make the Eagles were consistently able to get the ball into the hands of Shibuya, who did not miss down the stretch.
"It was big," said Shibuya of the free throw line makes. "In practice we do it over and over, I feel like every single point counts especially against this big team. We got to take advantage of the free throws."
Qin missed a pair at the line with Hawaii Baptist up 51-44 to open the door to comeback ever so slightly open, and Laboy hit a shot to make it a five point game. A steal on the ensuing possession allowed McKinney a desparation layup at the buzzer somehow fell through, but it was too little too late.
Hawaii Baptist closes out the regular season with a game on the road against Le Jardin. A win over the Bulldogs would clinch a regular season title and a berth in the state tournament.
