KAKAAKO—No. 4 Kamehameha-Kapalama used the long ball and backed it up with good defense to throttle No. 8 Maryknoll, 10-3 at McKinley's Tiger Softball Stadium Wednesday.

"The ILH is always a grind. Undefeated is something we have to play and win. It's a competitive league, top to bottom. We try to keep them focused," Kamehameha coach Mark Lyman said.

The Warriors pounded out 10 hits and Nevaeh Telles led with way going 2 for 3 from the plate, drove in four runs with a home run and a double to help Kamehameha improve to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings.

"Coming into this game, we knew Maryknoll is going to a be a really good team, a good hitting team with tough defense and pitching. We came in with a positive mindset to do the same, get as much hits as we can and play good defense, that's what showed tonight," Telles said.

The Spartans fell to 1-3 in the ILH.

Madison Rabe went the distance to scatter five hits struck out five and walked three to pick up the win.

"With Madi in the circle, she works on our spins in practice. She works really hard on her pitching and conditioning too, she lasted out the whole game. If she keeps working hard, hitting her spots, and do what she needs to do, we as a defense will back her up with the win," Telles said.

"Madi is a workhorse. She wants the ball and wants to be out there all the time and wants to compete. It was good to see her out there in her element and finding ways to get it done," Lyman said.

After a 18-run, 17-hit performance against Mid-Pacific (0-4) last week, the Warriors' defense held the potent Spartans in check with three runs on five hits.

"Their offense, we knew they have a very good offense. They swing for the fences, they have big hitters, fast hitters and have girls who understand the game very well. We tried to take that away from them as best as we could. For us to keep them to three runs is big for us," Lyman said.

Telles brought the Warriors first run of the game with a double to right to score one of Haley Agena's three runs. Colby McClinton went 2 for 3 and followed up with a home run blast to center for a 3-0 lead.

The Spartans responded in the bottom of the third inning after Breyli Agbayani-Shibao hit a two-out, line drive triple and Nellian McEnroe-Marinas brought the Maryknoll within a run after a home run to centerfield.

Rylee Gaudia led off the fourth with a solo home run to pad the lead. One out later, Destiny Lum doubled and Agena walked to set up Telles' crushing home run to make it, 7-2.

"When go up to the box, we're not trying to yank the ball out of the park. That's not our approach. We're trying to go up there hitting our pitch and trying to barrel up the ball and hit it hard so we can get on base. We trust that our teammates coming up to the box are going to score us," Telles said.

Ua Nakoa-Chung scattered seven hits and seven Kamehameha runs were earned as she was tagged with the loss. Jenna Sniffen came in for the remainder 3 2/3 innings to scatter three hits, of the three runs, one was earned.

Nakoa-Chung walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth and moved to third on Makena Nera's double to center field. Cathcart brought in Maryknoll's final run of the evening with a sacrifice fly.

Sniffen walked Gaudia and Kylee Matsuda reached first on a bunt and Gaudia moved to third. Destiny Lum reached on a fielder's choice. Agena reached on an error that scored Gaudia. Kamehameha brought in their final two runs after Cathcart's throw to first sailed.

The Warriors host top-ranked Iolani (2-0) on Friday, Apr. 1 while the Spartans look to bounce back as they go to Punahou (2-1) on Saturday.

Both teams are expected to play each other at Kamehameha on Apr. 11 in the regular season finale.
