Call it redemption or call it revenge.

Either way, you can call Hanalani Division II state champions.

The Royals bent, but ultimately did not break, claiming the school's first ever girls basketball title with a 40-37 win over ILH rival Mid-Pacific in the culminating game of the HHSAA/Snapple Division II Girls Basketball tournament held at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

Mid-Pacific took down Hanalani, 45-42, in the two teams' only meeting this season on Dec. 21 2019, but the Royals took care of business this time around.

Hanalani got off to a rough start, as starting point guard Faith Mersburgh picked up two quick fouls in the first three minutes of play and only returned for the final 49 seconds of the second quarter.

Lishae Scanlan became the focal point of the Royals offensively during that stretch, scoring eight points in the half, but picked up her second foul at the 1:55 mark of the second.

Despite the foul woes, Hanalani led 18-12 at the half.

With both Mersburgh and Scanlan saddled with some foul difficulty, the Royals needed other to make key contributions, and they most certainly did.

Maria Ralar stepped up offensively, and earned her 10 points with tough drives to the basket. She made only one field goal on seven attempts, but knocked down 8 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Jacie Nava toughed out an apparent shoulder injury and logged 31 minutes of play, providing steady ball handling. She shot only 2 of 10 from the field, but did not log a turnover.

Tatem Foster chipped in six points and 11 rebounds.

On paper, there wasn't much separating the two teams.

The Royals and Owls each hit 14 field goals in the game, and at a nearly identical percentage (28.6% vs. 29.2%). A plus-12 turnover margin in Hanalani's favor was certainly telling.

Despite that, Mid-Pacific actually led 34-33 at the 4:04 mark of the fourth on a made jumper by Madisyn Sagawa, but Hanalani quickly answered with a clutch jumper by Nava to give the Royals the lead for good.

Down the stretch, Hanalani made just six of 12 free throws, but the shots just wouldn't fall for the Owls on the other end, though Sagawa's shot at the final buzzer did swish through to make the final margin three.

Scanlan, who was named the tourney's Most Outstanding Player, sat briefly with an apparent injury after a hard collision with the baseline barrier, but returned a few possessions later after a short stint on the bench. She finished the game with 12 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

In her 21 minutes of play, Mersburgh chipped in seven points, two rebounds and two steals, and was an All-Tournament selection.

Sagawa led the way, as she had all tourney, for the Owls, with 15 points, but needed 18 shots to do so. Paige Fahrni hustled her way to six points, 12 boards and two blocks. Both were named to the All-Tournament team as well.

Rounding out the All-Tournament team were Kamehameha-Hawaii post Sarah Schubert and Hawaii Baptist guard Alexis Dang.
