KALIHI — Kiai Keone threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Kalanikuikahi Lorenzo with five seconds remaining as No. 9 Kamehameha rallied to stun Farrington, 28-25, at Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field in an OIA-ILH Open Division contest Saturday.

The Warriors dug deep to pick up their second win of the season to improve to 2-4 overall and get their first league win. Their last win came against Fagaitua (American Samoa) on Aug. 23. Since then they were outscored 76-7 in their two losses to Saint Louis and Mililani.

"It's a good boost because we were down after those games. To come here and get a dub in a tight one to find out what we're made of. We have to go out to Kapolei next week," said Kamehameha lineman Kuao Peihopa.

"That's all we talked about all week. We came off a couple tough losses. The fight is still in this team. We're getting better, we're learning what it is to win and grind like this. I'm happy we're able get this win just so they can prove to themselves that they're a good football team and keep working," Kamehameha coach Abu Maafala said.

After a roughing the passer penalty negated Calijah Mareko's interception in the end zone and following two straight incompletions, Keone threw his first touchdown pass of the season to Lorenzo, who was wide open in the back of the end zone and Preston Rezentes put through the PAT for a 28-25 lead with five seconds left.

"We were struggling throwing the ball downfield. We're just trying to attack them where we can get them. Quarterback (Keone) took a big sack, but he comes back in there, stands tall and makes a beautiful throw and he's growing up and he's learning how to do things. I'm proud of him," Maafala said of Keone.

Kamehameha squib kicked it and with two seconds remaining, Spencer Salcedo dropped Darius Chaffin for an 11-yard sack as the clock hit zeroes and the Warriors stormed the field in celebration.

Keone threw for 120 yards on 19-of-30 passing and Lorenzo caught a team-high nine passes for 42 yards.

Kamehameha scored first on their opening offensive series as Kawika Clemente rushed for a 55-yard touchdown and finished with 81 rushing yards for the game.

Farrington came alive in the second quarter as Raymond Millare scored on a 2-yard run and finished with a game-high 116 yards on 21 carries.

TJ Paleafei recovered a Keone's fumble at the 1-yard line and Torrence Liufau punched in a touchdown to put the Govs up, 14-7.

The Governors used some trickery as Chaffin lateraled it to Jonah Aina-Chaves, who threw it to Christian Havea for a 50-yard touchdown and Millare burst through for a 2-point run as Farrington took a 22-7 lead going into halftime.

"Our message was, we're in this together. Today in our devotions, we talked about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and being thrown into the fire. That was the fire getting down, 22-7. We we're tied together and we all stuck together. We needed to match their intensity because they were riding high and playing hard. I'm proud the way the team stuck together and finished it out," Maafala said of the halftime message for the second half.

In the third quarter, the Warriors responded and ran seven plays that resulted in Andrew-Lee Smith's 3-yard rushing touchdown.

Ezra Evaimalo, who had two sacks and a pass breakup, recovered Millare's fumble that popped up in the air and returned it five yards as the Warriors trailed, 22-21 following Rezentes' PAT.

"Our defense scoring a touchdown was big for us. We could feel the guys get reignited a bit and we hung onto that and coached them through it," Maafala said.

The Warriors, who was 1 for 4 on fourth down conversions, would turn it over on downs and Farrington came away with a 28-yard field goal from Jalen Joe Cabrales to make it, 25-21.

Both teams would turn the ball over on downs on their next offensive series and Kamehameha got the ball back with 3 minutes and 15 seconds left on the clock. Keone converted a fourth-and-5 with a 26-yard pass to Blaze Kamoku to the Govs' 15. Mareko and Farrington's interception celebration was short-lived as the Govs were flagged for roughing the passer to set the ball on the 9 for the game-winning score two plays later.

"It showed us we can hang with tough teams. Farrington will punch you in the mouth. To come out here to swing with them for four quarters and to come out with a victory is big for us," said Peihopa.

The Govs after beating Kapolei on Sept. 6 was seeking their second overall win, but dropped to 1-5 overall, 1-2 in OIA play.

Kamehameha travels to the west side to face Kapolei and Waianae before hosting Campbell on Oct. 12 to conclude regular season play.

Farrington has a two-game home stand against Waianae and Saint Louis before traveling to the North Shore to face Kahuku to wrap up the regular season.
