Iolani's Yonamine signs with Phillies

All-Hawaii Division I Baseball Player of the Year, Micah Yonamine, signed Tuesday with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The recent Iolani graduate was a 29th-round selection and one of two high school players from Hawaii taken in the draft. The other was his classmate, All-Hawaii outfielder Shane Sasaki, who was a third-round pick by Tampa Bay.

"It feels awesome," Yonamine said in a text message. "So rewarding to have hard work pay off. And it's amazing that I get to continue to play baseball while getting paid for doing it."

Yonamine, who had committed to Illinois State, said his signing bonus was equivalent to a sixth-round pick. The bonus range for a sixth-round pick is from $237,000 to $301,600, according to BaseballAmerica.com.

He will be assigned to the Phillies' rookie club in the Gulf Coast League, which starts its season June 24.

Yonamine set a single-season state record by hitting 11 home runs this past season.
