Male Athlete of the Week: Orin Caleb Sherman, Farrington baseball Farrington baseball coach Eric Tokunaga knew that Orin Caleb Sherman's first outing against Moanalua wasn't indicative of the senior pitcher's true ability.
Last week, Sherman got to prove his coach right. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound right-hander picked up his long-awaited first win of the season after going 4 2/3 innings on the mound in a 12-4 road win over Na Menehune Wednesday. He allowed two earned runs, scattered seven hits and registered four strikeouts against one walk.
"We were hoping that he was gonna come through and perform the way he's capable of. That's what we tell our guys all the time," Tokunaga said of Sherman, a third-year varsity player. "Everybody does well in practice, in bullpen, so when the lights come on, you gotta perform and that's what he did, so that was good to see."
Sherman threw 55 of his 91 total pitches for strikes (60.4 percent) and got the first pitch over for a strike against 12 of the 23 batters he faced. Sherman hit one batter and got five ground-ball outs to three fly outs.
"I think mostly he was able to throw strikes. His command of his fastball was a lot better, he threw his breaking ball for strikes — that helped a lot — and then because we scored some runs that made it easier for him to come over the plate," Tokunaga said.
Sherman, who goes by Caleb, was making his fifth start of the season. His best outing prior to Wednesday was against Castle on March 27, when he allowed two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings but failed to get enough run support in a 2-1 loss to the Knights.
In his first start this year, Sherman was unable to get through the second inning against Kailua. He gave up eight unearned runs and got a no-decision in the 12-8 loss to the Surfriders. A week later, Sherman was the losing pitcher in a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Moanalua. He was tagged for four runs on two hits and five walks in 2 1/3 innings by Na Menehune.
"That's what we were trying to figure out. It was so uncanny of him the way he lost his command against Kailua and Moanalua in the first round, so we just tried to focus in on getting his fastball over the plate and stuff like that," Tokunaga said.
Tokunaga credited Sherman's maturity to not press when things aren't going his way.
"The thing about Caleb is he's pretty even-keel kind of guy. He's pretty consistent with his emotions so he's always ready to play," Tokunaga said. "I never worry about him about being too up or too down; He just comes ready to play."
Not only did Sherman pick up the win on the rubber Wednesday, he also excelled in the batter's box. He helped his own cause by going 3 for 3 at the plate with a couple of runs batted in.
Sherman's first-inning sacrifice fly to center field allowed Payton Okada to score to make it a 2-0 Farrington lead early on. In the top of the third, Sherman lined a double to right field to plate Okada again to stretch the lead to 3-0. In his final plate appearance, Sherman reached base with a single through the right side of infield.
"He's not an overpowering guy velocity-wise, but he's got four good pitches that he can throw, so he'll keep batters off-balance," Tokunaga said of Sherman, who plans on attending Arizona State University in the fall. "He's sneaky fast and then hitting-wise he's a streaky hitter and then he's got some power potential."
Sherman, one of six seniors on the roster, typically bats fifth or sixth in the Govs' lineup. He did a little bit of pitching last year, but mostly served as a corner infielder.
"I'm really happy for him. He's been one of our main guys in the program for the last three, four years — actually all the seniors — we've got good leadership," Tokunaga said. "They're not the ‘rah-rah' type, they're quiet and just come to practice every day, do their jobs, never complain; they just play hard and that's it."
Another one of those seniors is Nanakuli-transfer Clyde Enos, who has been steady in the role of staff ace. Enos has compiled a 4-0 record with a 2.75 ERA in six appearances this season. Enos, along with a more confident Sherman, form a solid 1-2 punch for the Govs heading into the final week of the 12-game regular season.
"At this point in the season we're gonna need some guys to start throwing the ball, so obviously if Caleb can turn the corner and start being consistent on the mound that's gonna help us in the playoffs," said Tokunaga, whose team is riding a three-game win streak following Friday's 9-6 win over Roosevelt.
Farrington won the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II championship last season and was promoted to D1 this year. With one game left in the regular season, it remains in contention for a top-two finish in the D1 East and the first-round bye in the league tournament that comes with it.
"I try to follow (New England Patriots coach) Bill Belichick's model, his mentality, that all we worry about is the next game and although we know what's at stake and what is happening — just like golf, like Tiger Woods, you gotta concentrate on every shot no matter what is going on around you — so we just try to focus in every day, try to do something to get better and just play one game at a time," Tokunaga.
Sherman and the Govs will host Castle (5-6) at Joey DeSa Field Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Female Athlete of the Week: Chasity McKean, Kapolei softballThe Friday night lights were not too bright for Chasity McKean.
McKean, a senior and fourth-year player on the Kapolei softball team, turned in her best game of the season in Friday night's 4-3 upset of No. 5 Waianae that was played at McKinley as part of an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West doubleheader.
The 5-foot-7 McKean, who primarily plays second base this year after spending most of her junior season in the outfield, made her first start in the circle against the Seariders.
You could say it went well.
"She pitched the game of her life, probably the best game she ever threw in high school and club ball," Kapolei coach Keoke Behic said. "She threw a gem."
McKean allowed one earned run in a complete game six-hitter. The right-hander struck out six batters, got six outs via ground outs and induced eight fly-ball outs. She threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of the 30 batters she faced and got over 60 of her 98 total pitches for strikes (61.2 strike percentage).
It was the second appearance for McKean as a pitcher this season. She logged two innings of work in a 14-run win over Aiea two Saturdays ago.
"It was out of necessity," Behic said. "Jade (Behic) pitched every inning of every game prior to that and she was just getting tired and I needed to rest her for (Wednesday's playoff opener against Castle), because that is the biggest game of the season and Chasity being the team player she is, she was like, ‘Coach, I can do it,' and I'll be honest with you, I wasn't expecting seven stellar innings on TV against Waianae."
Not only did McKean get the win in the circle, she also clutched up at the plate going 2 for 3 with a couple of home runs and three RBIs.
McKean grounded out in her first at-bat, but tied the score at 2-all with one swing of the next her next time up. McKean led off the bottom of the fourth inning with her second homer of the season — her first since the regular-season opener against Leilehua — on a fly ball over the fence in left field.
The Seariders reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth inning, but McKean had an immediate answer in the bottom half of the frame with her go-ahead, two-run home run to left.
"I think what impressed me the most is that she got out of her own way, if that makes sense," Behic said. "She's the type that thinks about every single thing and every single thing affects her, good or bad, and what I told her prior to the game was, ‘Girl, you been pitching all your life, you been playing softball all your life, so trust your training.' "
"I talk a lot about this to the kids: when the lights go on and the cameras go on they get nervous obviously, but I wanted to impress upon these kids that, ‘You've been playing this game all your life. Trust that what you've been learning all your life will be enough and Friday night she did that," Behic added. "Prior to that, she had started to feel better. She told me, ‘I feel like I'm hitting better. I'm not as upset after I get out of the cage, I'm squaring more balls up, I'm feeling more confident,' and she's that type of player that if she feels good, look out because she'll take over a team and that's what happened on Friday."
McKean has certainly displayed her versatility over the years. Behic said that McKean has played every position except for catcher and has slotted into numerous different spots in the batting order.
"It all depends on who's hot and who's not, but she's versatile enough to move all over the place. Actually, she's hit in almost every single part of our lineup. She's hit leadoff, hit second, hit third, hit clean-up — it really depends on the rest of the team — but she and Jade move around based on the needs of our lineup at the time," Behic said. "That's what makes Chasity a special player: she's versatile, she's athletic, she does everything above average, she is a good speciality hitter, she can hit-and-run, slash-and-run, bunt-and-run, she's very good at all the speciality hitting."
Kapolei was already short on pitching after its ace and University of Hawaii-signee Cira Bartolotti decided to forgo her senior season and junior Tatum Guzman suffered a season-ending knee injury just three games into the year. Thus, McKean's emergence as a dependable second arm late in the season provides a big boost entering the playoffs for the Hurricanes, who finished fifth in the OIA D1 West standings.
"I've had a really ugly feeling since Tatum Guzman went down because I had no viable second option and Chasity gives us that now, which makes me feel a lot better because the bottom line is if we are to be successful and go deep in the playoffs we need a second arm. That's just how Jade is built, she can't go three, four, five days in a row like a (former Campbell ace Danielle) Cervantes did, so if we want to be successful and are to be successful, then Chasity is going to be a huge, huge, huge part of it."
McKean, who is signed with the College of Southern Nevada, is batting .367 and leads the team in hits (11), runs (6), home runs (3) and RBI (6).
"The message to her teammates was, ‘Look, the playoffs are coming. I'm gonna try my best to help you with some run support and being the unofficial leader that our team needs,' so I think it was fitting. All year long she's been the person that would send messages to the team and make sure that everybody is at practice on time, what uniform to wear, so it's fitting that toward the end of the (regular) season she's playing well and we're hoping this continues to (Wednesday) and the rest of the week."
Kapolei has won its last three games after an 2-7 start to the year, which included four shutout losses. Four of their losses were decided by two runs or fewer.
"In softball and baseball, (if) you score zero runs you lose, no matter how good your pitcher throws, so I think we've been really, really, really working on getting little better quality at-bats and being tougher outs and looking at the last three games — Pearl City, Aiea and Waianae — I think when I look over those at-bats, that's what the team did, they gave little bit tougher at-bats and I think that's been the difference," Behic said.
McKean and the Hurricanes (5-7), who moved into the ninth spot in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, will visit East fourth-seed Castle (6-6) in a first-round game Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. with the winner advancing to take on top-ranked Campbell (12-0) in Thursday's quarterfinal round. The semifinals and finals of the tournament will take place Friday and Saturday, respectively, at McKinley.
