AIEA — Deacon Kapea and Cody Marques helped Waipahu score 42-straight points to crush Aiea, 42-14, at Na Alii's field Friday evening.

The Marauders bounced back from an excruciating, waning-second loss to Damien last week to improve to 4-2 overall, 3-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I standings to move up to second place behind Moanalua (4-0 overall, 4-0 OIA).

Na Alii dropped to 2-2-1 overall and 2-2 in the OIA.

Kapea rushed for 162 yards and four touchdowns and recorded an interception to step up in the absence of Alfred Failauga, who was out with a hand injury.

"I was waiting for this opportunity to come and tonight was my night to shine and I'm glad to be on the field as a running back," Kapea said.

"I'm proud of him, he stayed quiet and humble. He played safety for us the past two years. He had running back experience from Damien and his name was called this week and he stepped up big time for us," Waipahu coach Bryson Carvalho said of Kapea.

Marques threw for 119 yards and a touchdown on 11-of-20 passing and added another with his feet.

"We want to make sure we establish our run and the line of scrimmage. We want to make sure the run game gets going and I think once we do, it makes us successful in all aspects of our offense," Carvalho said.

Zacharia Kalahiki-Basque returned the opening kickoff 42 yards and 12 seconds later, Kayson Castillo threw a 55-yard touchdown to Fabian Bautista, but the kick failed for a 6-0 lead.

"We had a bunch of guys out on that first drive for disciplinary reasons. Unfortunately we weren't in good coverage and got caught on the first play. Rules are rules and we want to make sure the kids follow all team rules," Carvalho said.

The Marauders responded with 42-straight points, 28 coming in the first half.

Aiea had about 24 players suited up and Waipahu turned to the run to wear down Na Alii as several players were playing both ways.

"I'd like to thank all five up front. Without them I wouldn't able to do anything," Kapea said of his offensive line creating opportunities for the team.

"That was the game plan," Carvalho said of wearing down a short-handed Aiea squad. "To establish the run and have Deacon to have his way."

Waipahu countered Aiea's opening score with a nine play drive. Joel Auvae started on the opening series and drove the Marauders downfield that resulted in Kapea running in for a 5-yard touchdown and Brycen Amorozo (6 of 6 PATs) put through the kick for a 7-6 lead.

Auvae threw for 80 yards on 5-of-8 passing and an interception.

After a very short Na Alii punt, the Marauders needed three plays to score on a 6-yard passing touchdown from Marques to Jovan Gooman.

Aiea went three and out and five plays into the drive Kapea had a 23-yard gain that helped set up his 3-yard touchdown. Waipahu took advantage of good field position on the Na Alii 25 and the Marauders found the end zone four plays later with Kapea rushing for a 2-yard touchdown for a 28-6 lead.

Na Alii started on their own 15 and got all the way down to the Waipahu 17 in a drive aided by Marauder penalties. Kapea intercepted Castillo's pass near the end zone to deny Aiea an opportunity to add points before the half.

Waipahu scored on their opening drive in the second half despite two touchdowns being called back by holding penalties. Marques scored on a keeper from 2 yards out to finish a 10-play drive.

Aiea turned it over on downs and 10 plays later, Waipahu made them pay as Kapea added his fourth touchdown of the night to make it, 42-6 with 3:59 remaining on the clock in the third quarter.

Castillo finished the night with 189 yards, two passing touchdowns and two picks. He threw a 41-yard touchdown to Kalahiki-Basque, who finished with 75 yards, for the final points of the night.

Waipahu hosts Nanakuli (0-5 overall, 0-3 OIA) on Sept. 21 while Aiea hosts Leilehua (4-2 overall, 3-1 OIA) on the same night.
