It was too little, too late for West second seed Radford.

Despite a 21-point fourth quarter, the Rams were hampered by a slow start in a 42-36 loss to No. 10 Moanalua in Wednesday's Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I quarterfinal game at the Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

Na Menehune (9-3) will face East top seed Kahuku (9-2) in Monday's semifinal at McKinley. During the regular season, Moanalua beat Kahuku, 49-45.

With the win, Moanalua clinched a Division I state tournament berth. Radford (8-3) will host Campbell (8-4) Friday in a fifth-place semifinal. The winner will secure a state berth and the loser's season will end.

Raven Rosa-Lasco's game-high 15 points led a trio of Na Menehune who scored in double figures. Delylah Sanerivi added 11 points and a staggering 17 rebounds, and Kelcie Leong had 10 points.

Salara Dill and Angela Howell scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the Rams. Howell led her team with nine rebounds.

Moanalua took a 31-15 lead into the fourth period. The Rams used a 10-0 run in the first half of the fourth period to cut their deficit to 10. Radford then followed with an 8-4 run to pull to 37-33. That was the closest the Rams got since the game was tied at 6 early in the first period. But Moanalua followed with three more points to take a seven-point lead. Radford finished the game with a 3-2 run, but it was too late, despite the Rams outscoring Na Menehune, 21-11, in the fourth.

"Radford is No. 2 (in the West) for a reason," Moanalua coach Tani Almont-Done said. "We knew that was in them to do that. My girls lapsed a little bit and that momentum shift. These big games of one momentum shift shifts the entire game. So I told my team you can't give them something to get excited about."

The Rams pressed Na Menehune late to cut their deficit But they could not do it all game long because of their lack of depth.

"We had to press because of the deficit we were in." Radford coach Charles Chong said. "We dont' go too deep so we can't press too much. We have to kind of pick and choose. Hand it to Moanalua; they played really disciplined, played well the first three quarters of the game. We tried to get them to rush a little bit. We gave ourselves some opportunities to get back into the game. I'm real proud of the Lady Rams. They played with heart to give themselves a window of opportunity to take the game."

Radford's downfall came early and it was unable to make up the large deficit. The Rams trailed 19-9 at the half, scoring only one point in the second quarter. The Rams turned over the ball eight times in the second period, yet Na Menehune only managed five points.

"We had to take care of the ball," Chong said. "We have to be less tentative and be more aggressive. Usually when we're aggressive, better things happen."

The Rams had single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters before their 21-point fourth.

Almont-Done said her team has been getting off to slow starts, too, including in Tuesday's win when the Rams were held to single-digit scoring in the first two periods in a 38-22 win against Kapolei. Radford finished with 13 and 11 points in the third and fourth quarters to dispatch the Hurricanes.

"That was key throughout the season," Almont-Done said. "We've been coming out. We always come out slow, even last night (against Kapolei), same thing happened to us, so we needed to shift it today."

Sanerivi was a force in the paint for Moanalua with her 17 boards.

"She's coming up big on that," Almont-Done said. "I think her teammates, they're starting to score on the outside. Everybody we come across know we have her, they double team, so she has do know that disbributing to everybody and picking up the rubbish is key. Being at the right place at the right time. Boxing out is what we worked on last week."
