Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
Warriors, Lunas hold overnight leads at state wrestling

KAKAAKO — The Kamehameha boys and Lahainaluna girls lead the team standings after the first day of the Chevron/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena Friday.

The Warriors, who won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title last week, have accumulated 78 points and hold a 10-point lead over Interscholastic League of Honolulu-rival Iolani. They are seeking their sixth state crown and first since 2013.

Of Kamehameha's tournament-best 12 boys entrants, five of them — Kysen Terukina (113 pounds), Matthew Perez (132), Kamakanamakamae Tapia (152), Trever Kahunahana (160) and Amir Mirza (195) — advanced to Saturday morning's semifinal round.

Defending champion Iolani and Campbell, which sits in third place with 63 points, have six semifinalists each. Both teams have a pair of past individual state champions still alive in the Raiders' KJ Pascua (170 pounds) and Dane Yamashiro (285) and the Sabers' Triston Santos (126) and Micah Tynanes-Perez (220). All but Santos are seeded first in their weight bracket.

The only other two returning state champions — Moanalua's Logan Garcia and Saint Louis' Corey Cabanban — appear to be on a crash course with one another in the 120-pound division. Garcia, who won at 106 pounds last year, is seeded second to Cabanban, who won at 106 two years ago and 113 last season.

Garcia will meet third-seeded Kawehi Gillcoat of Lahainaluna, while Cabanban will face off against Kapolei's Jayson Pagurayan in the semifinal round.

Baldwin and Moanalua are tied for fourth with 47 points each, while Lahainaluna (44), Waianae (43) and Saint Louis (42) follow in the boys' team standings.

Lahainaluna, the Maui Interscholastic League champion, scored 88 points Friday to hold a 10-point lead over ILH titlist Kamehameha in the girls' team standings.

The Lunas put seven of their 10 wrestlers through into Saturday's semifinal round. Two of them — 107-pounder Iverly Navarro and 112-pounder Alexis Encinas — are past individual state champions.

Navarro is hoping to defend her title at 107 pounds, where she is expected to meet Kamehameha's Ashley Gooman, who moved up from 102, where she won a state title last season. Encinas, the 2015 state champion at 107, is seeded second at 112 behind Roosevelt's Macy Higa, the defending champion at the weight class.

The Lunas are seeking their second state title in three years. They swept the boys and girls team crowns in 2015.

The Warriors have the next most semifinalists with five, while third-place Pearl City has four.

Pearl City (65 points), Moanalua (62) and Roosevelt (54) round out the top five girls' teams. Baldwin (53 points), Kapolei (43), Kahuku (43) and Waianae (42) follow.

Three other individuals are seeking a second individual state crown. Radford's Angela Peralta and Leilehua's Kelani Corbett are trying to defend their titles at 145 and 155 pounds, respectively, where they are the top seeds, while Kahuku's Teniya Alo is trying for her second championship at her second different school. She won at 122 pounds while attending Iolani in 2015 and is the top seed at 132 this weekend.

Also of note are three pairs of siblings that moved on to the semis. Brothers Kysen and Zayren Terukina are the top seeds at 113 and 132 pounds, respectively. Kysen, is a freshman at Kamehameha, while Zayren is a sophomore at Campbell. Meanwhile, Kapolei sisters Allicia and Allie Mahoe are seeded second and third at 97 and 117 pounds, respectively. Additionally, Kaiser's Ikei sisters — Tiare (112) and Roselani (132) — are two wins away from a state title despite being unseeded.

There were no upsets of No. 1 seeds Friday, but five No. 2 seeds went down. All 28 brackets saw at least one of its four seeded wrestlers lose Friday. The boys' 113- and 220-pound brackets each have just one top seed left.
