Breaking down OIA D1 Football playoff scenarios

The Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I regular season wraps up this weekend and all berths in the 12-team postseason tournament are secured, but the placement of the seeding is still up in the air.

Kahuku and Kapolei are the top seeds in their respective divisions while Nanakuli and Radford have been eliminated from playoff contention. Kaiser is locked in as the Blue Division's sixth seed. Everything else will be determined with this weekend's result.

The team capsules below will explain what each team needs to do to receive the highest possible seed in the playoffs.

OIA Division I Red Division

Kapolei Hurricanes
Current league record: 5-1
This week: vs. Nanakuli (0-6) Friday
Highest possible seed: 1
Lowest possible seed: 1
Note: The Hurricanes clinched the Red Division's top seed with their 28-7 win over Farrington last Saturday. Even if Kapolei loses to the Golden Hawks this weekend, it still owns the tie-breaker over the Governors and Mililani should all three teams finish with a 5-2 league record.

Farrington Governors
Current league record: 5-2
This week: idle
Highest possible seed: 2
Lowest possible seed: 3
Note: Farrington is at the mercy of this week's matchup between Mililani and Leilehua after falling to the Hurricanes last weekend. The Governors will get the conference's second seed with a Leilehua win, but will play in the first round if the Trojans win.

Mililani Trojans
Current league record: 4-2
This week: at Leilehua (3-3) Friday
Highest possible seed: 2
Lowest possible seed: 5
Note: The Trojans have the most to gain, and the most to lose this weekend. Mililani controls its own destiny and can clinch a first round bye and a state berth with a win this Friday, but it didn't do itself any favors with its loss to Kailua last week. A loss against the Mules will drop the Trojans to the fourth seed because Leilehua will own the tie-breaker over Mililani. If both Leilehua and Kailua wins this weekend, the Trojans will play on the road in the first round of the playoffs.

Leilehua Mules
Current league record: 3-3
This week: vs. Mililani (4-2) Friday
Highest possible seed: 3
Lowest possible seed: 5
Note: After starting their season with three straight losses, the Mules have the opportunity to close out league play with three straight wins. A win against the Trojans this Friday will give Leilehua the conference's third seed because it will own the tie-breaker. Leilehua could drop to as low as the fifth seed if it falls to Mililani and Kailua defeats Castle this weekend. If both the Mules and the Surfrider lose this week, Leilehua will have the conference's fourth seed in the 12-team tournament.

Kailua Surfriders
Current league record: 3-3
This week: vs. Kailua (2-4) Saturday
Highest possible seed: 4
Lowest possible seed: 6
Note: The Surfriders came away with a come-from-behind win over Mililani last week, but could still end up traveling in the first round. If Kailua takes care of business on homecoming night against the Knights, it will finish with the fourth seed no matter who wins between the Trojans and Leilehua. If Castle ends up winning against the Surfriders, Kailua will be the sixth seed because both teams will have the same record and the Knights will own the tie-breaker.

Castle Knights
Current league record: 2-4
This week: at Kailua (3-3) Saturday
Highest possible seed: 5
Lowest possible seed: 6
Note: Castle clinched a playoff berth with its win over the Golden Hawks last Friday. The Knights will receive the conference's fifth seed with a win over Kailua this weekend. A loss will have Castle traveling to the Blue Division's third seed when the playoffs begin next week.

Nanakuli Golden Hawks
Current league record: 0-6
This week: at Kapolei (5-1) Friday
Highest possible seed: -
Lowest possible seed: -
Note: Nanakuli was eliminated from playoff contention when it lost to Castle last week. A win against the Knights would have left both teams with the same league record, with the Golden Hawks owning the tie-breaker. The outcome of Nanakuli's matchup this week will not affect the playoff seeding.

OIA Division I Blue Division

Kahuku Red Raiders
Current league record: 6-0
This week: at Kaiser (1-5) Friday
Highest possible seed: 1
Lowest possible seed: 1
Note: Kahuku's shutout win over Moanalua last Saturday and Waianae's loss to Campbell the night before locked up the conference's top seed for the Red Raiders. The defending OIA and state champions will host the winner between the Red Division's fourth seed and the Blue Division's fifth seed in the quarterfinals

Waianae Seariders
Current league record: 5-2
This week: idle
Highest possible seed: 2
Lowest possible seed: 3
Note: Waianae could have clinched a state berth and a first round bye in the playoffs last weekend, but faltered on the road to the Sabers. Campbell owns the tie-breaker over the Seariders so Waianae's seeding will be determined by the outcome of the Sabers' matchup with Radford. If the Sabers' win this week, Waianae will host the Red Division's sixth seed in the first round of the playoffs.

Campbell Sabers
Current league record: 4-2
This week: vs. Radford (0-6) Friday
Highest possible seed: 2
Lowest possible seed: 3
Note: The Sabers are in a good position to earn a first round bye with their win over Waianae last week and their upcoming matchup with winless Radford this Friday. A win this week will give Campbell the conference's second seed while a loss will drop it to the third seed. The Sabers own the tie-breaker over Aiea so they can finish no lower than with the third seed even if Aiea defeats Moanalua this weekend.

Aiea Na Alii
Current league record: 3-3
This week: at Moanalua (2-4) Friday
Highest possible seed: 4
Lowest possible seed: 5
Note: Aiea will have home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs if it defeats Moanalua this week. A loss to Na Menehune will have Na Alii traveling to the Red Division's fourth seed next weekend.

Moanalua Na Menehune
Current league record: 2-4
This week: vs. Aiea (3-3) Friday
Highest possible seed: 4
Lowest possible seed: 5
Note: Moanalua is in the same predicament that Aiea is in. Win this week and you play at home in the first round, lose and you have to travel. Should Na Menehune lose and Kaiser upsets Kahuku, both team will have the same record, but Moanalua will still have the fifth seed because it owns the tie-breaker over the Cougars.

Kaiser Cougars
Current league record: 1-5
This week: vs. Kahuku (6-0) Friday
Highest possible seed: 6
Lowest possible seed: 6
Note: The Cougars are locked into the conference's sixth seed no matter what happens this weekend. An upset win over Kahuku this weekend will look impressive, but will have no bearing on the league standings. Kaiser currently owns a tie-breaker over Radford, who has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Radford Rams
Current league record: 0-6
This week: at Campbell (4-2) Friday
Highest possible seed: -
Lowest possible seed: -
Note: The 2015 Division II state champions had a rough go-around in the move up to Division I and was eliminated from playoff contention when they lost to Aiea last week. Radford can play spoiler this weekend if it can stun the Sabers on the road. Radford will do Waianae a favor this Friday if it earns its first win of the season because it will give the Seariders the conference's second seed. A loss to Campbell will give the Sabers' the second seed instead.
