KAPOLEI — Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 376 yards and 3 TDs, Jaymin Sarono and Wyatt Perez each had over 100 receiving yards to help lift No. 5 Kapolei past Kailua, 34-20 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Division game at the Hurricanes' field on Friday night.

The Hurricanes, who improve to 5-1 overall, 4-1 league, sets up a pivotal showdown against No. 8 Farrington (4-1 overall) on Sept. 24. The Surfriders drop to 2-3 overall, 2-3 league and will host Mililani (4-1 overall) on Sept. 23.

On their opening offensive series, the Hurricanes moved the ball down field, but Tagovailoa was intercepted by Dakota Kadooka near the 7 yard line. The Surfriders could not capitalize on the turnover and punted.

Tagovailoa bounced back from the turnover to find seven different receivers and threw for two TDs in the first half.

"Taulia played well. Sometimes the expectations are crazy since people expect 500 yards and five TDs, but we'll take the win," said Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez.

"Our first drive was flat. We had a good halftime and we had to wake up. A win is a win. Knowing my role, when the ball came, I did what I could do with it," said Sarono, who caught nine passes for 139 yards.

Following a Surfrider punt, Kapolei marched 85 yards on eight plays. Antoneo Brown bullied his way all the way down to the Kailua 10 and got extra yards from a facemask penalty. Tagovailoa found Wyatt Perez for a 5-yard score.

Both teams traded punts, Kailua got the ball on the Kapolei 49. Of their 10 play drive, they ran nine rushing plays which resulted in a Mark Lagazo 2-yard TD to tie the game at 7.

"Their objective, their offense was going to slow it down to keep our offense off the field and their defense played pretty well. Although we had a lot of yards and we moved the ball between the 20s, we weren't able to put up points and capitalize as much as we should have," said Hernandez.

Kailua was flagged for a passing interference on a third-and-7 that took it to the 11. Two plays later, Josh Kansana rushed for a 3-yard TD that finished a eight play 65 yard scoring drive. Beau Meyer's kick was no good to make it, 13-7. Meyer was 4-for-5 on the night for PATs.

The Surfriders went a quick three-and-out and Kapolei got the ball back with 1:54 remaining. Tagovailoa threw a 54-yard pass to Jaymin Sarono that set up Sarono's 6-yard TD reception to give the Hurricanes a 20-7 lead going into halftime. That scoring drive covered three plays, 92 yards in 47 seconds.

"We made the right plays, we missed tackles and it leads to extra yardage and they moved the chains. Hats off to them, they did a good job and made the least mistakes," said Kailua coach Joe Wong.

To open the third quarter, Kailua went three-and-out. Four plays later, Tagovailoa threw a 7-yard TD to Isaiah Ahana to make it, 27-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Chauncy Gonsalves-Ball returned it 89 yards for the score, but the pass failed to make it, 27-13. Gonsalves-Ball had three returns for a total of 157 yards.

Kapolei stalled on offense which allowed Kailua to creep back into the game. Lagazo led a five play scoring drive by rushing for a 6-yard TD with 2:59 remaining.

"He can run and was effective with his play action passes. He's a good player," said Hernandez.

Kansana was able to rush for a 12-yard gain forcing the Surfriders to call a timeout. Following the timeout, Tagovailoa found Perez for a 47-yard gain to the Kailua 1, where Brown finished the drive with a TD to help Kapolei pull away for good with 1:23 remaining.

"A blown coverage in one area, it leads to a big play for them. One or two plays here and there, we're in the thick of this game. They fought out there, but Kapolei was the better team today," said Wong.

Defensively for the Hurricanes, Leonard Lee had an interception, Omar Mareko had a sack, tackle-for-loss and a pass breakup. Kukea Emmsley sacked Lagazo for a 21-yard loss late in the game. Rocky Savea and Dylan Naehu each added tackle-for-losses.

Christian Mejia had a tackle-for-loss and a sack and John Sniffen had a sack to lead the Surfriders.
