Seeded players marched on in both boys and girls divisions of the Carlsmith Ball/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Tennis Championships at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii Tennis Center and Mauna Lani Bay Hotel Fitness Club on the Big Island.
In singles play, Farrington's Andre Ilagan, the boys top seed, cruised to 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0 wins in his first two rounds of action, as did girls top seed, Hilo's Emily Soares, who dispatched her first two opponents 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2.
Doubles matches saw the boys top-seeded duo, Punahou's Austin Hamamoto and Hia Lam, win both opening matches by a score of 6-3, 6-2, while the girls No. 1 pair, Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Sato of Kamehameha-Maui, advanced 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2.
Punahou's Caityn Arce and Celia Chang marched through to the quarters with an opening round upset of sixth seeded Erin Jyo and Taryn Fujimori of Mililani, 6-2, 6-2. They followed that win up with a 6-3, 6-2 win in round two.
Quarterfinal and semifinal action continues Friday, with championship matches set for Saturday.
