MAKIKI — Kailua busted out the bats in a key road win Monday afternoon.

Desiree Chang led the hit parade by going 3 for 4 at the plate and three others paired hits to power Kailua to a 6-3 come-from-behind win over eight-ranked Roosevelt at Stevenson Middle School.

With the win, the Surfriders pulled even with the Rough Riders at 8-3 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I East standings.

Kailua rapped out 11 hits to back the complete-game pitching effort of Dyani Cummings-Lani to extend its win streak to five games.

"Our bats are coming around," Surfriders coach Tamara Kaluau. "We're hitting in the right time so that's going to be big. It seems like the girls' timing is getting there and offensively they're doing well."

Leadoff batter Robi Lono went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored and Kamaile Hanawahine tripled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored another. Jennika Odo had a pair of singles in the win and Chang added a double with a pair of runs scored in the win.

"We worked on hitting a lot," said Chang, the Kailua right fielder.

The Surfriders avenged a prior loss to the Rough Riders earlier this season when they blew a late lead.

"We played a lot better this time," Lono said. "We were more consistent with the bats and hopefully we can just keep playing like how we are."

Kailua's hitters took a proactive approach at the plate against Roosevelt pitcher Mari Foster, who got ahead of count often the last time the teams met.

"Today we were real aggressive and we were hitting her hard so that was good," said Kaluau, whose team had at least one base runner in every inning after the first.

Kailua drew first blood in the top of the third when Cummings-Lani led off the inning with a single past shortstop. She eventually came in to score when Taufau Williams drew a bases-loaded walk. One batter later, Akamulei Makua was hit by a Foster pitch to score Lono.

Roosevelt got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on Maya Nakamura's sacrifice fly to plate Tyra Wallrabenstein, who reached base on an uncharacteristic error by Lono, a four-year starter at shortstop for Kailua.

The tying and go-ahead runs for the Rough Riders were plated on Danika Stewart's two-out double to centerfield to give them a 3-2 lead.

However, the lead was short-lived as the Surfriders pulled ahead of good in the top of the sixth. Chang led off the inning with a double down the right field line and came home on a triple by Hanawahine, who scored on an error in right field. Lono hit a two-out double and scored on a second Roosevelt error in the inning to make it a 5-3 lead.

"We came back and that's good," Kaluau said. "It was a good team effort and that's what we've been striving to work on and they've done it so even though we have those errors it was good to see the girls hit. Normally we fall back and we fold but this time the girls played together, hung in there and it's a good win."

Kailua added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Chang and Hanawahine.

Cummings-Lani allowed three runs, one of them unearned, on four hits to pick up the win.

Haylie Uetake went 2 for 3 with a run scored for Roosevelt, which had a two-game win streak snapped. Foster went the distance and was the losing pitcher.

Both teams wrap up the regular season Thursday. Kailua will visit fifth-ranked Kaiser, while Roosevelt will host Castle.

The Surfriders can clinch the East second seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming 12-team OIA Division I Tournament with a win over the unbeaten Cougars.

If the Surfriders lose to the Cougars, the Rough Riders can claim the second seed with a win over the Knights.

Should both teams win Thursday, Kailua would hold the tiebreaker (quality wins) over Roosevelt. However, if both teams lose there will be a coin flip to determine the No. 2 seed.
