Kill: A. Matautia (MOA) 14 kills

SALT LAKE — Austin Matautia did damage from just about every spot on the court to lead unbeaten Moanalua to a convincing sweep of visiting Kalaheo Tuesday night.

Matautia, a senior outside hitter, put down a match-high 14 kills and had five service aces in the 25-12, 25-14 win for Moanalua, which completed an unblemished regular season at 11-0.

Na Menehune, who have dropped just one set all year, will be the Eastern Division's top seed in the upcoming 12-team Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Tournament.

"I was really happy with how we played," said Matautia, who is signed with the University of Hawaii. "It was just a couple of plays where we just need to be more focus and concentrate on our side. There were a couple of plays where we weren't in it mentally but we bounced back and we came back strong and came out with the win."

As it has been all season, Moanalua was simply dominant from start to finish Tuesday. Matautia had four kills and all five of his aces in the opening set.

Na Menehune never trailed in game one after opening the match on a 5-0 run. They stretched their lead to 11-2 on Nalu Demello's tip. The Mustangs got within 15-10 following a Moanalua service error, but the hosts closed out the set on a 10-2 run that included four consecutive aces by Matautia.

"This game was just a phenomenal game for him; serving, hitting, just an all-around game," Moanalua coach Alan Cabanting said of Matautia. "It was awesome."

Matautia credited Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Guy Enriques, his club coach with Southside Elite, and University of Hawaii assistant Milan Zarkovic with helping to improve his jump serve.

"It really started last year with coach Guy," Matautia said. "He really taught me, if you're going to serve, you can't just go in and bomb serves out, you have to keep it in and it also came to this year with Milan Zarkovic rom UH. He helped me learn how much I can control and when I can go at it and when I have to hold back. It just helps with the culmination of both of them and I'm just really happy with that this year and I'm really excited for next year."

Caleb Casinas' kill in the middle and a perfectly-placed block by Justen Fong and Seyj Engleman got the final two points of the set for Moanalua.

Game two started out a little shaky for Na Menehune, who trailed 6-5 early following Kainoa Peterson's kill. However, it was the last time the Mustangs led in the match.

Three consecutive Kalaheo errors — a service error into the net, a hitting error wide and a net violation — put Moanalua ahead, 8-7. Matautia's third kill of the set ignited a 13-3 run that was capped by Brayden Batungbacal's kill off the block and out to set-up match point.

Kalaheo managed to score back-to-back points to make the score 24-14, but Batungbacal ended it with his only other kill of the match.

Cabanting said his team was trying to work back in both Demello and setter Zach Miyamoto.

"The execution wasn't as great as I wanted it to be, but with those two guys coming back and then, of course, senior night festivities, and all the distractions with that, I think we could have been cleaner, but we're trying to work things out again."

Matautia added eight kills in the second set. He had kills from both the left and right sides as well as a handful out of the back row and even put away his penultimate kill on an impressive step out move.

"We were just (thinking) might as well (because) we were winning by a lot. It was senior night so we might as well try something different," Matautia said, just prior to Moanalua's senior night ceremony.

Moanalua's senior class has been a part of five straight OIA championships, all under Cabanting's guidance.

"I'm really proud of all of them," Cabanting said. "I think this was a special moment for all of them — these seniors especially — they've been together for four years and they've worked hard. I've put them through grueling times and so as far as putting it all together their senior night, it really did come together."

Peterson had five kills and Spencer VanDerKamp added five digs to lead Kalaheo.

The Mustangs, who had won three of their last four matches, fell to 6-5 with the loss.
