WAIPAHU — The last time Pearl City was in the state final, some of the girls on the team weren't even born yet.

Sunshine Fontes' goal in the 22nd minute help lift the Chargers over second-seeded Iolani in the semifinals of The Queen's Medical Center/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division i Girls Soccer Championships at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Friday night.

Pearl City (15-1), the Oahu Interscholastic Association runner-up, will meet third-seeded and Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin (11-1) in its first title match appearance since 2000.

"We just played all out and we wanted it," said Fontes, a freshman forward. "It feels great because it's my first year in high school, my first year on this team."

Second-seeded Iolani, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu titleist, suffered its first loss of the year and dropped to 11-1-2.

Fontes, the state's leading scorer with 29 goals, was in the right place at the right time for the game-winning score.

Sophomore forward Daelenn Tokunaga, who is second in the state with 25 goals scored, dribbled her way down the right side of the pitch pass the 18-yard box before kicking it across. The Raiders' center defender mis-headed the ball as it directed its way to Fontes coming down the middle of the field. With no defenders in front of her, the freshman forward fired a shot into the back left corner of the net for the lone goal of the match.

"Sunshine has vision," said Pearl City coach Frank Baumholtz III. "If you watch her on that, she backed up and just went tap. She didn't drive it, just tapped it in and it went in the back corner. To win on a soft one like that has to hurt (Iolani)."

The Raiders gave up just two goals during ILH league play. They have now given two goals in their first two state tournament games.

"It is what it is," said Iolani coach Kristin Masunaga.

Baumholtz also considered the match to be one of his team's better defensive performances. He credited Bree Fuller, Nahenahe Damas, Kylie Lewis and Megumi Takushi for keeping Iolani at bay. Goalkeeper Sydney Young had four saves in the contest, three coming in the second half.

"It's so stressful to score early and then win 1-0," he said. "The only thing worse than that is being up 2-0 and they get casual."
