A big fourth quarter helped No. 4 Maryknoll pull away from No. 6 Iolani, 62-41 in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchup at Iolani's Lower Gym on Saturday evening.

The Lady Spartans improve to 5-1 in the ILH standings while the Raiders drop to 2-4. Maryknoll won 47-30 earlier on Dec. 16. They will play again two weeks later on Jan. 23 at Iolani.

Chayse Milne led the team with 10 points, Rhianne Omori and Kodee Viena each added nine points.

"Coach emphasizes getting the ball in the paint and driving the ball and being aggressive," said Milne. "We don't have just one player to shoot the ball and we have a lot of depth and that's our strongest attribute."

The Lady Spartans pull away for good after they took a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter to make it, 51-36. Viena and Omori each hit 3-pointers during that run forcing Iolani to call a timeout at 5:18. Maryknoll outscored Iolani, 21-5 in the quarter.

"That run was crucial, I think our depth kicked in and our 1-3-1 zone covering the 3-point line, the first half I was losing my mind," said Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado. "I think with our zone with our length and size, we wanted them to run into our size. I think in the first half we lost focus on that and gave up too many 3's, second half we did a better job."

Maryknoll took a 7-0 lead after Lindsey Lee's bank shot, but Iolani outscored the Lady Spartans, 12-2 to take a 12-9 lead going into the second quarter.

After two ties, the Lady Spartans took a 25-19 lead, but a 3-pointer from Camy Aguinaldo and a free throw from Sierra Buscher made it 25-23 at halftime.

Maryknoll started to extend their lead until Kelsi Ikeda hit a baseline jumper before the buzzer as the Raiders trailed, 41-36 going into the fourth quarter.

"I thought there were some 50/50 balls we didn't get and that could've changed the momentum. I think their size took over and they are deep and talented. I think their size started to wear us down," said Iolani coach Dean Young.

Both teams got production from their benches: Maryknoll got 20 points from their bench, while Iolani's bench carried the scoring load with 26. Ikeda came off the bench to lead the team with 10 points.

Aguinaldo added eight points and went 2 of 7 from the 3-point line. Buscher added seven points and eight rebounds— six were offensive.

Maryknoll went 6 of 19 from the 3-point line, while Iolani went 5 of 23.

"Quite frankly if you rely on the 3-point, it could be the kiss of death, unless you're hitting them. We tell our kids not to be imbalanced, we need to drive and get the ball in the post," said Furtado.

"I thought we were getting the looks we wanted to get. We missed some opportunities that we could've got if we practiced it more often," said Young.

Maryknoll will play at Sacred Hearts (0-5) on Jan. 13 while Iolani looks to regroup to play Kamehameha (1-4) on Jan. 12.
