Mililani downs Campbell, 50-38

EWA BEACH – Jazmina Lafitaga scored a game-high 20 points – 10 in each half – and Mililani defeated host Campbell, 50-38, Friday night.

It was a big win for the Trojans (6-1) who are tied for second with Leilehua (6-1) in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West. But Mililani has the head-to-head tiebreaker that would make it the second seed in the division girls' for the 12-team OIA tournament if the season ended today.

The Sabers (5-2) fell to fourth; their losses are to Leilehua and Mililani. That puts Campbell at a disadvantage as far as tiebreakers for seeding, but it hosts first-place Radford (6-0) Friday. The Rams still have to play Leilehua (Jan. 21).

Lafitaga, who was 12 of 15 from the free-throw line, also had six rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot. Taysia Canon followed 15 points, a third of them coming on 5-of-6 free-throw shooting.

"Yeah, it was a big game for us," Lafitaga said. "We have to keep winning so we can stay (near the) top and not drop any more seedings before the playoffs."

Danielle Silva came off the bench to lead the Sabers with 10 points despite fouling out of the game.

"Every game for us is important," Campbell coach Summer Aona said. "As much as possible, we want to have a good standing playoffs. It's just going back to practice and making sure we execute."

The Trojans suffered their only loss to Radford, yet, they have managed to stay in contention even without 6-foot-1 post Shantel Appleby, an OIA West all-star last season. Appleby sustained a season-ending knee injury in the OIA West season opener against Waipahu about a month ago. What has happened is the Trojans are getting contributions all around. Kalena Gibson did not score, but pulled down eight rebounds. Hope Carter scored seven points and had eight rebounds and two steals coming off the bench.

"This season was unfortunate," Lafitaga said. "We lost Shantel and Megan (Shimabukuro), our other guard, both seniors, to ACLs, but we make it up by just playing harder as a team and everybody pushing each other and playing team ball."

Added Mililani coach Pat Basilio: "I know they really have to depend on each other. We're stressing now because we're not going to be the bigger team now. I'm pretty sure we're going to be over-sized every game we get, so we'll have to work on positioning, boxing out."

The Trojans showed their toughness in the fourth quarter. They took a commanding 29-15 lead into the half, only to see the Sabers their deficit to four entering the fourth quarter.

"I think, the third quarter, we started losing our composure," Basilio said. "With the guards that Campbell has, they capitalized. We just let the game get away from us a little bit, but we regrouped in the fourth quarter."

Mililani recovered nicely in the fourth, in part to 13-of-19 free-throw shooting (to control the game the rest of the way.

"We tried to get the clock to stop, but the risk is we stop the clock, issue their free throws, we get it back, we shoot and we score," Aona said. "(But) they made all their free throws and we couldn't score."

Overall, the Trojans were 24 of 36 at the free-throw line. Campbell wasn't as successful, hitting 11 of 19.

"That was huge," Basilio said. "We haven't been very good in our free throws. Everybody stresses that, today was one of those days we came through with that."
