Radford had an 'Ace' up its sleeve

Ace Faumui – a Jack of all Trades - displayed all his versatility in helping Radford beat Kaimuki, 28-6, Friday night to capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II championship at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

The Rams' Faumui, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound all-purpose player, scored two touchdowns – on one offense and another on defense – and played acting role is setting up another to help the Rams (11-0), tops in the Hawaiian Electric Division II Power Rankings, become the first team to reach three OIA D2 (formerly the White) titles, surpassing Campbell, Kaimuki and Waipahu, each with two.

"Ace has done some good things for us and he's a weapon," Radford coach Fred Salanoa said. "(Opponents) definitely have to account for him when he comes in…Ace is an awesome player. I don't want to depend on one person too much, but sometimes we have to do that and Ace is one of those guys we have to hang the weights on for a while to carry the team and he's been doing a good job of handling the situation."

Faumui, who shared wildcat/quarterback with Blaise Manabe and Quintin Iriarte, got the Rams on the board first with a four-yard TD run up the middle.

After Kaimuki pulled to 7-6 in the second quarter, the Rams began pulling way in the third on a trick play set up by Faumui, who set up in the wildcat position before going up to the line, pretending to give his linemen a new play or cadence. Instead, he lined just outside and behind the right tackle and the snap went to Manabe, who fired a seven-yard TD to Iriarte to make it 14-6. To the Rams, it was a routine play.

"It's just repetition every week at practice," Manabe said of selling the fake. "We practice it everyday at practice, so when it comes to game, it's almost second nature to us."

After a fourth-quarter two-yard TD run by Manabe to make it 21-0, a minute later, Faumui provided icing on the cake with a 45-yard interception return for a TD to make it 28-6 with 7:15 left in the game.

"What really felt better was my defensive touchdown," said Faumui, who also had five tackles while playing linebacker, safety and cornerback. "I was locking on my man. I finally got something out of it."

Faumui said relishes being on the field all the time, even though it might be exhausting.

"They're both positions I love," Faumui said of being QB, RB, DB and LB. "I've grown up playing both ways."

Next stop for the Rams: the Division II state tournament.
