Loss to Red Raiders took physical toll on Govs

HALAWA — Farrington football coach Randall Okimoto is hoping the game is all that was lost Friday night.

The Governors, who were shutout for the first time this season in the 40-0 OIA semifinal loss to undefeated Kahuku, also saw a number of players go down with injuries over the course of the game.

Among the wounded were four defensive players in defensive lineman Foi Sila, defensive back William Prescott and linebackers Finau Walter and Joey Maae. Furthermore, brothers Kingston and Kingsley Moses-Sanchez — a pair of wide receivers — also went to the sidelines with second-half ailments.

"We've got to go home and check to see how badly we are injured, but I think we'll be okay," Okimoto said. "From what I heard, not too many guys were seriously hurt. I don't expect guys to be out for next week, but we've got to wait and see."

The Red Raiders imposed their will against the Govs to the tune of 289 yards of total offense — all coming via rush, behind a wall of seven offensive linemen and three fullbacks. They averaged 5.9 yards per carry, led by Kesi Ah-Hoy's 175 yards on 23 attempts.

"Give credit to Kahuku; I like the way they were patient," Okimoto said. "When Ah-Hoy runs the ball he's very patient. He waits for his blockers, waits for it to open up, then he hits the hole and on top of that he's a very strong runner, so no one guy can take him down."

The game started off on an ominous note for Farrington. Sila went down after Kahuku's first play from scrimmage and Maae was tended to just one play later.

"It's not too bad actually, because we've got a lot of subs to go in, but that's kind of to be expected," Okimoto said. "Guys falling on each other and the pile it was taking guys a while to get off of each other and that's what it's all about."

Earlier in the week Okimoto expressed the difficulty of preparing for a team like the Red Raiders, who average 268 rushing yards per game.

"It's not easy because these guys are very physical," Okimoto said. "They executed and we didn't. Already in the game they were kind of having their way and I was kind of disappointed in our guys mentally. They were kind of mentally down and we can't do that. That's not what championship teams do, so that's a lesson we've got to learn defensively."

The Governors will have a week to regroup before facing off against sixth-ranked Waianae in the OIA third-place game at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium Saturday night. The winner secures the league's final spot in the state tournament, while the loser's season is over.

"We're just banged up, but it was a good tuneup for whatever team we play next week, because it's a new season going into the state tournament," Okimoto said. "We have new life, so the OIA season is done and we've got to move on to the state."
