MAKIKI— Nanakuli ran past Roosevelt, 40-14 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II game at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium on a rainy Friday night to continue their winning streak.
"Any game, doesn't matter win or lose, there are mistakes. Every week we go back to the drawing board and making sure we correct those mistakes. They (Roosevelt) had us against the fence a few times. They were capable of making big plays and they never quit," said Nanakuli coach Keala Watson.
The Golden Hawks ranked No. 2 in the Hawaiian Electric/ScoringLive Division II Power Rankings, improve to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the OIA. The Rough Riders drop their second consecutive game to fall to 2-4 overall, 1-4 OIA.
Despite the soggy weather, the running game was a bright spot as the Golden Hawks churned out 226 net rushing yards led by Sunshine Anuenue, who rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns, his longest run was 59 yards.
"Sunshine, as the season goes on, he comes through clutch. He works to drive those legs and to get those extra yards," said Watson.
Nainoa Banks threw for 191 passing yards and Keanu Momoa led the receivers with three catches for 96 yards and touchdown, his longest reception was 51 yards.
Off a Roosevelt punt, Ethan Valiente recovered the ball after a Nanakuli player muffed it. However, Shastyn Kekahuna fumbled the ball and Randy Manewa recovered it for the Golden Hawks. Four plays later, Sunshine Anuenue rushed in for a 14-yard touchdown.
Nainoa Banks threw a 42-yard touchdown to Momoa and Anuenue added his second touchdown to make it, 21-0 in the first quarter.
On a fourth-and-1, the Rough Riders faked the punt and snapped the ball directly to Chavis Paia, who ran it for a 60-yard touchdown and he added two sacks in the first half. Dillon Yamamoto's kick made it, 21-7.
The Golden Hawks' defense was opportunistic, cashing in three turnovers for points.
"We challenge them every week to step up," said Watson, on the defense. "These guys got the heart and that's what matters most."
Roosevelt could not handle the snap on the punt and Chyson Hoopai recovered a fumble in the end zone, but the run failed. Isaac Pascua recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Rough Rider 14-yard line. Six plays later, Banks scored on a 1-yard keeper and Clifford Cunningham's kick made it, 34-7 with no time left on the clock in the third. Cunningham went 4-for-5 for PATs.
Kekahuna hooked up with Eusebio for a 29-yard touchdown. Defensively for the Rough Riders, Eusebio had two interceptions and Valiente had an interception.
Nanakuli's Anthony Booker came in to add a 1-yard touchdown, after Anuenue's 59-yard run, for the last score of the game.
Nanakuli will play Anuenue on Sept. 18 at Roosevelt, while the Rough Riders travel to Kailua to play Kalaheo on the same night.
