Week 2 notebook: Road Warriors

Dan Lyons' team has logged its share of frequent flyer miles in the past two weeks.

Kamehameha-Hawaii, the fifth-ranked team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division II Football Power Rankings, opened the 2015 season on Oahu with a 21-6 win over eighth-ranked Kalaheo. Over the weekend the Warriors hit the road once again, this time coming away with a 51-0 win at King Kekaulike on Maui.

"It's always tough traveling because you're worried about everything from making sure the players are sleeping well, well fed, you've got some long days, there's a lot of sitting around and you hope all of those things don't affect them when we play," Lyons said. "The thing it does give us is time to grow a little bit closer and bond as a team. Maybe we don't usually have time with the guys, so we can get cleaner on things and clearer on our basics, so we try to use that time as best as we can, but it's always a tough deal to have to travel."

While on Oahu, the Warriors were housed in the dormitories of Kamehameha's Kapalama campus. They returned to the Big Island that Sunday and departed for Maui early Saturday morning.

"Last week we took one day off because the guys were so tired," Lyons said. "We weren't sure about (Tropical Storm Hilda), so we took Thursday off and just rested. I think it was a smart decision."

The Warriors stayed overnight Saturday at Kamehameha-Maui's wrestling room before flying back to Hilo Sunday afternoon.

As if that weren't difficult enough, Kamehameha-Hawaii will once again take the field Thursday night in a non-league game against Waiakea.

"I think we'll be the first (Big Island Interscholastic Federation) team to play on a Saturday and then play on a Thursday," Lyons said. "I think it's tough because it's not the normal schedule. We're still trying to figure out what practice is going to be like (Monday)."

Lyons said the team had a light practice and some film study Sunday and won't practice in full pads until Tuesday.

The BIIF is playing about one Thursday game per week this year due to a shortage of officials. This is the first of three Thursday-night games for the Warriors this season.

"It's going to be interesting," Lyons said. "It'll mean a couple of more weekend practices for us. We have to figure out when we rest and be strategic about how we practice."

As for the game itself Saturday, it was a one-sided affair. Kamehameha-Hawaii held a 43-0 lead at halftime, thanks in part to a pair of first-half rushing touchdowns by running back Kaeo Batacan, who ran in three scores against Kalaheo.

"We have a pretty decent offensive line and (Kaeo) is certainly part of what we want to do. We want to get him the ball as much as we can," Lyons said. "I thought special teams, defense and offense all in all played really well. We didn't have a lot of penalties on our side and I thought our execution was pretty crisp."

The Warriors are coming off a BIIF D2 league crown in 2014 and a semifinal appearance in the state tournament.

"We talk about taking steps toward a championship like a ladder and sometimes we go up, sometimes we go down, but I like where we're at right now," Lyons said. "Our goal is to get one game further than we got las tear and we're still maintaining that goal. We obviously have a lot of improvement to do and there's certainly a lot of competition in D2, but I think we feel like we have a chance and that's what we're shooting for at this point."

WILDCATS OPEN UEMOTO-ERA WITH HARD-FOUGHT WIN
The past met the present in Kealakekua Saturday night.

During halftime of Konawaena's season-opening 18-6 win over visiting Saint Francis, the Wildcats honored three of its former BIIF-championship winning coaches in Bob Fitzgerald, Aaron Nagata and Cliff Walters.

"I think it was pretty cool," current head coach Brad Uemoto said of the festivities. "It was pretty packed considering it was raining. There were a lot of former players that came out and they got to get on the field with the coaches. It was a neat atmosphere. We've posted the years of our 20 BIIF championships up in the stands and we're trying to bring that tradition back."

Uemoto said three more former coaches (Roy Aukai, Jim Barry and Earl Crozier) during the next home game on Sept. 4 when Konawaena takes on two-time D1 league champion Hilo.

"I talk quite a bit to a lot of those guys," Uemoto said. "They're still in the community — I run into coach Jim Barry at the store, coach Walters like to see what we're doing and I talk to Aaron Nagata quite a bit, too — so we talk a lot of football."

Uemoto, a 1997 graduate of Konawaena, has been a longtime assistant in the program, but Saturday marked his first game as a head coach.

"It was definitely a little nerve-racking," Uemoto said. "I think I was honestly more nervous coming into the week, but by probably Thursday just seeing the boys kind of start stepping it up a little, I started to feel more confident and by kickoff I told my defensive coordinator that I think we're ready and those nerves went away. Having those three former coaches in the crowd that were very successful at the school is definitely something that I've got to live up to here."

On the field the Wildcats jumped out to a 14-0 lead after a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes from Austin Ewing to Kamakana Chung.

"Austin did a good job," Uemoto said of his sophomore quarterback. "We had just six linemen so we were holding as breath as far as injuries up front. We only have one returning starter there in Zach Kaiwi; the other four guys had zero playing experience at the varsity level."

Konawaena extended its lead to 18-0 with a pair of safeties before halftime.

"One of the safeties was an outside run and one of our kids popped the ball loose and it rolled out the side of the end zone," Uemoto said. "The other safety was a blocked punt that (Saint Francis) recovered in the end zone."

Uemoto was impressed by the Saints (1-1), who opened the season with a 62-0 blanking of Anuenue in week one.

"I thought they were a very good team," Uemoto said. "They have good size, they're very physical and just a real tough opponent. I think they have a good shot at coming out of the ILH and if that sort of comes true, then that's a good sign for us."

Uemoto's squad, which is ranked seventh in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, faces a road test this week when they take on ninth-ranked Kauai at Vidinha Stadium in Lihue Saturday night.

"Kauai will be a good test for us," Uemoto said. "They're a good program and playing over there will be tough."

SHUT IT DOWN
Week two saw its share of blowouts. In fact, seven games were decided by 20-or-more points.

The biggest margin of victory — or defeat, depending on which side you are looking at it from — was shared by two teams. No. 1 Mililani poured it on against McKinley, 73-14, and No. 3 Punahou pummeled Hilo, 59-0.

In other one-sided affairs, fifth-ranked Kamehameha blanked Baldwin, 53-0, Kamehameha-Hawaii shutout King Kekaulike, 51-0, Iolani shutout Kealakehe, 37-0 and sixth-ranked Farrington routed Waipahu, 46-6.

Conversely, six games were decided by one score or less. Friday night Waialua held off Kalani, 21-16, Pearl City edged Roosevelt, 14-7, Aiea topped Kaiser, 47-43, and No. 10 Waianae defeated No. 8 Moanalua, 43-37, in overtime. Saturday's tight-contested finishes included Castle rallied past Campbell, 33-32, and Kapaa got by Lahainaluna, 14-10.

There was also one forfeit — by Anuenue, to Radford — over the weekend.

UPDATED LEAGUE RECORDS THROUGH WEEK 2
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu continued to flex its muscle over the weekend.

Teams from the ILH went 4-1 in week 2, with Saint Francis' 18-6 loss at Konawaena Saturday going down as the only defeat suffered by a league team so far in 2015.

Here are the updated records by league:
